need help with t-5

I need help finding out whats wrong with my trasmission. Its grinding going into forth gear and their is a spinning noise in the trans while in netural with foot off the clutch, as soon as you push on the clutch pedal the spinning noise goes away. Please help thanks.

Although it's pretty hard to dianose these kinds of noises online, experience tells me you need to look at the syncro's for 4th and maybe the input bearing retainer (right term?) for the spinning noise your mentioned.

Sounds like a hosed output shaft. The front part of the shaft that mates with the input shaft may be worn and chewed up. This lets the output shaft flop around and when the slider tries to bridge the gap its a no go and grinding results. Had this happen to me once. Went to a friends house to snag an output (he had around 5 T5 donors laying around) and ALL but 1 of his had the same problem.

Try double clutching it going into fourth, if that improves the grinding a little, sounds like your syncros need some help.

A really easy way to tell if it is the shaft is to drain some of the fluid from the trans. If there is any major shaft damage, you will see little metal flakes in the fluid. If the fluid looks nice and clean(red) it may just be the syncro or a fork pad after all.
