Got a new 302 Shortblock for my car for x mas and am wanting to have a mild street car with around 265-290 hp. What head cam intake combo will be needed to do this. It will have a roller cam in it keep in mind. thanks for the help. its goin in a 70 coupe. with a c4 behind it

yes, vacuum secondaries open only when there is enough load on the engine to require extra fuel and air. the mechanical secondaries open when the throttle is pushed hard enough, even at idle. you can also use an air valve secondary carb as well, like the edelbrock, carter afb, or rochester quadrajet. on these type carbs the secondaries open when the throttle is pushed open, but the air valve opens when airflow overcomes spring or weight resistance.

Im no expert but do you NEED that good of a head to make 265-290? I will agree they will give you room to grow but I think the HP goal could be had for cheaper.

Agreed. The recommendations are overkill, IMO, but some excess is always a good thing so you have room to grow, right? With that being said, look for a set of used World heads or GT40's of one type or the other on Ebay, etc., if you have price limitations that prevent the use of the heads suggested. From what I understand, however, make sure you know about the header fitment issues if you go with GT40 P heads.

yes you can get ported stock heads that will allow the engine to make the same power, but then you have about the same money in stocks heads as you would the aftermarket heads, and the aftermarket heads have other advantages going for them like;

1: thicker castings

2: more efficient combustion chambers

3: better port design

4: less chance of cracking

the heads that i recommended are perfect for an engine that makes around 300hp if you leave the ports as cast, and do allow for more power in the future. remember that when you are building an engine that you want to most efficiency possible, and the most capability for the money.

AFR 185 flow 277 @.600, they hit 200 cfm at .350 lift. According to http://allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/630.shtml 185' are only out flowed by Vic. Jr.,TFS R, Canfield, and Victors. I think your suggested H/C/I combo would produce well over the 1 hp per cu. desired.

The Jan 2006 issue of mustangs and fords has an artical about a roller 289 making 301 hp using stock heads with a little money in them.

AFRs cost $1300

Long tubes should not be a problem at all. If you want to spend over $1K on aftermarket heads (and have the room to grow later) consider the AFR-165s. I think they are closer match for your power levels. You can also buy GT40 aluminum heads for very little money since so many guys are replacing them, with the right pistons they work quite well and have the benefits of lighter weight and less detonation.

Yeah, if you want to go aftermarket I think the 165s would be a good choice over the 185s. Then again if you could have your stockers worked for around 500 you could have higher compression as well and still get to your goals cheaper.
