I think I have a leaking head gasket or intake gasket, I get a decent amount of white smoke when I get on the gas a little bit. This summer I am going to put on a Master Power t62-1 turbo and want to make sure my gaskets and rest of the engine is all good. The engine is basically stock so I figure I will tear into it, replace the gaskets, and anything else? What kind of gaskets? I really dont know what all I should do when I get in there. Also once I get the turbo I am going to get it tuned pretty conservatively. Let me know what you guys think
Thanks
Tommy

One word...COMETIC!

You wont pop these, and They are reusable up to 3 times. I run them on my N/a and N20 cars. Plus, my lightning uses very similar gaskets for just about every sealing surface in the motor...blower to manifold, manifold to heads, heads to block...and that sees regular 13lbs of boost.

yeah heard about cometics and that probably will be the way to go. Wheres a good place to get them? will go with some arp bolts too. Anybody else have any ideas?

sounds like good insurance to me, even if you don't need it.
Of course use new arp bolts, and you may want to find a head gasket made for boosted cars.

Yeah more than anything its all about having that little insurance so i dont blow up anything. Thanks!

damn those cometics ar expensive, i've seen a lot of people go with the felpro 1011-1 or 2 for their head gaskets and they work pretty good, plus they are less than have the price of cometics.......

i did 4 headgaskets in a month's time untill i learnt my lesson. I was using 9333-pt1's which everyone reccomends.....

Call up jegs and order the fel-pro MLS gaskets and get arp studs.

clean the surfaces REAL clean and use copper gasket spray on both sides of the gaskets. make sure you use some hightemp rtv on the lower headstuds that are in coolant. Torque the uppers to 95 and lowers to 90 ftlbs in 4 stages.

With this setup, i got a run of bad gas and got some bad knock and they still held.
my other ones would blow with unnoticable knock!

yeah i was hoping that you would chime in, I read all about those gaskets in yours threads, thats gotta suck. Hopefully I dont have the same luck.
Thanks guys!

I know the cometic's are expensive but if you think about it...you can reuse them up to three times. They WILL NOT blow...even under punishing circumstances.

I ended up paying just under $200 for both but my time and headaches are worth alot more than that so later down the road I dont have to worry about popping them.

I just dont want to have to say I TOLD YOU SO.

After reading all over it seems like everyone says to go with the fel pro 8548 which is very surprising because thats the "stock replacement." Most people don't like like the 1011's and im unsure about getting the mls gaskets, I would much rather blow a gasket than wreck the engine.

to each his own. the MLS gaskets will hold more power but will blow if it's too much. I would be more hesitant on o-ring the block/heads than getting MLS HGs.

get ARP studs, not bolts. Summit has them and they are decent priced.

i see that you have awaiting install of the 3.73s. might want to reconsider that if your going turbo. ask eades and kyle about the benefits of a lower gear for a turbo application

some people say they run regular gaskets because they are the weak link....problem is they are TOO weak and blow way to easily. i dont want to see a .......why is there coolant shooting out of my overflow thread lol

also, like prokiller said, 3:73s are no good for boost. you want 3:27 or 3:55 max!

yeah i'm still thinking of what to do.....
definately going with the arp studs though, 7/16 right?
and yeah the 3.73's will not be going on if i do go with the turbo, i'll just leave in the 2.73s untill i figure out exactly what i want. thanks

Been there done that =)

9333pt-1's are what I have run and have had good luck with them. They usually only blow right before something catastrophic happens, and I would rather have a blown gasket than a collection of rod and cap pieces laying in my oil pan. FWIW - the most boost I was able to run on stock gt40 heads was about 12.5psi on 93 octane with an intercooler before the gaskets cut loose.

Other than gaskets - put new springs on your heads! Just like superchargers - turbos put pressure on the backside of your intake valves, but typically put at least twice as much boost pressure as you are running on the backside of your exhaust valves. If you have worn out valve springs, your performance will likely suffer as a result.

Studs are nice, but bolts will do just as well IMO as long as you torque them down right.
