Hey whats up,
I am trying to fix up my stang but need help with buying parts from time to time and I am not knowledgeable about foot pound and torque. I want to be able to my own stuff and I have tools. I dont want NOS or a Turbo, I just want an all American car.
What do you suggest for mods on my car because this is what I have so far:
- Diablo Chip - havent placed in yet
- Mac short headers
- Cold air intake
- Spec Clutch stage 1
- H pipe
- Flow masters

What else do you think I can use to increase power but keeping it costly?
Joe

I'm assuming by "costly" you mean within a reasonable budget, so to make your car faster I'd start with a different gear for your rear end.

3.55s or 3.73s will make your GT significantly quicker from a dead stop. Depending on what tires you have on the GT right now, you might want to switch from cheapo tires to some good drag radials, which will prevent wheelspin if and when you get some new gears.

For $0, you could also get rid of any dead weight you don't use/need, like rear seating, center console, air conditioning (maybe), passenger seat, radio/speakers, fog lights, sound absorbers, or even trim and carpeting.

As for "power", like making more average HP/torque, you could try 1.7 roller rockers or a set of underdrive pulleys.

I'll sell you my 347CID Stroker motor w/ AFR 185 Heads, Compcam XE274HR, Edelbrock RPM, C&L 73 MAF w/ 30lbs injectors to make your car run near 400 RWHP on all motor without buying parts and parts from time to time.:D

Check out a ported lower intake manifold. There's a guy on these boards named TMOSS that produces some pretty good results for pretty cheap I think. Hey Young, upgrade that C&L 73mm MAS to an 80mm Pro-M and I bet you'd see a few more horsies. With the right tune, I could see your motor breaking 400RWHP. You twEECing(sorry for the off topic)?

another vote for the intake. the stock lower intake is the biggest restriction to air flow. $400 will get you brand new upper/lower intakes. you can usually find used ones for less than that either on ebay or in the stangnet classifieds.

the chip will help alot, but you may need to get it burned again after you do some mods to get the most out of them.

gears are good too, but they are hard to do yourself. 3.73 if you have a manual, 4.10 if it is automatic.

Black96VertGT I disagree with you. A chip, especially something like a Diablo chip, doesn't really do anything you can't do with a timing light and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Until you get into serious mods like heads/cam, a chip is a waste of money in my opinion. Even after serious mods I think a twEECer or something similar is a much better option. Boricuaitaliano, you said you wanted to do your own work. I think gears are a great option but they are perhaps the only mod most people say you should NOT do for yourself. I tore out, stroked, rebuilt, and reinstalled my engine with my dad's help, but I'm not brave enough to tackle a gear install myself.

Thanks guys,
I was talking more like little things that I can do myself. I was thinking about changing my gears to a 4:10 or something like that but that will have to wait. I always shop on EBay for parts and I have been checking out Throttle body's. Someone told me I should get a 65mm BBk and if I go with the 70mm I may lose power on the low end. What is your suggestion about a throttle body? The only things I want to do now is Pulleys, TB and MAF.
I was thinking about changing my injectors later on down the road to a #24 and as far as the chip goes I haven't programmed it yet.
So my question to you is this:
1) What MAF should I go with? C&L?
2) What throttle body should I go with meaning size and I am hoping it doesn't matter what manufacture I buy it from as long as its affordable right?
3) Would installing Rocker arms and fuel injector by in myself be easy?

Also I lowered my car so I am using low profile tires with 18" chrome cobra rims and I am not trying to race but if some one steps up I want to be able to beat/hang with that car, especially those V8 Cameros 6 spd. As far as those fixed up rice rockets go, I can be them with my stock engine so they are no threat to me:-) This is my second 94 stang and I will never buy or own a rice rocket! I believe in real American Muscle cars but low rider style.
Thanks,
Joe

not be a killjoy, but theres being thrifty an then theres being realistic and realistically any ls1 is going to hand you your ass unless you come to the plate w/ some serious hardwear or talent.. poweradder or H/C/I, gears, good trannie. 94's are some of the slowest cars factory stock (AODE especially) if your in a 5-spd, your ahead of the game, if you were like me, a 5-spd or preformance auto should be in the future.. you'll lose 15 percent of whatever power your makin through the drivetrain, so the more power you can save the more responisicve your car wll be to the mods you make.

timing and fp are easy mods, 12-14*,and some kind of adjustable Fuel pressure regulator..
pullies are cheap. they' re good for staving off accessory drag of your belt. very good mod.
gears will get your car movin faster. 2:73 or 3;27 are oe factory good for durability and gas milage. get some 4:10s in that 8.8 an your car will pull a lot faster.

but realistically, you wanna play w/ the big boys, you need to spend some dough. stroker engines, turbos an superchargers are great and worth the price. racing engines are built to do one thing...run liek a bitch!! an will take jus about any kind of abuse you can throw at em.

Thnx Wytstang,
Is it easy to replace an upper/lower intake?
Also when you say gears your talking about my ring and pinions right?
Thnx,
Joe
An intake swap is a very straight foward job look at the FAQ section uptop of this forum and they have posted a step by step process(with pics to help). And yes I'm talking about the ring and pinion.

You da Man!
Do you think I can replace my ring and Pinion on my own in my garage? I am no mechanic though...lol I have a leak in the rear differential area not sure what part. I cleaned the differential cover area earlier and will check tomorrow.
You guys are right about living in La, la land if you think spending a few bucks here and there to make my **** run like a pro. I will save my money and buy a better intake, rocker arms and move up on the fuel injecters.
Joe

Last two questions,
What do you recomend?
I was thinking 4.10 FORD Racing Mustang 8.8 Ring Pinion Rear End Gears.
What do you think?
Also what is an average price to have a mechanic install these suckas?
Thnx,
Joe.

Well the 3.73/4.10 is an on going war here some will say 3.73 others swear by the 4.10. It's really up to you and the type of driving you do, example if you drive on the highway alot and your average speed is say 70 with 3.73 your RPMs will be around 2300/4.10 will have you around 2500. If you only drive on average short distances you could get away with the 4.10, just the rule of tumb around here is 5 speeds(3.73)autos(4.10). To install expect depending on the pay rate in your area anywhere around $300 would be a good guess but well worth the fact the person doing it knows what they are doing and if they don't a new rearend for you :D

That’s a tough decision to make.
I have some dude hooking me up by installing a racing clutch for $80.00/ labor. I wonder if I could get him to do the ring and pinion. And as for driving it would most likely be short distance and when I am on the freeway my speed limit is 80MPH..... so it's a tough one to make. Most of my driving is cruising and sometime I would drive two hours away.
Thanks and happy 4th.
Joe
