have a couple of questions about it. i thought i knew what it sounded like but now im not sure.

everybody says it sounds like marbles in a can. this would lead me to believe it would sound very metallicy.

is pinging at a random pace or is it timed???? meaning: RANDOM...pingping ping ping ping pingpingpingping ping ping ping pingpingping or

TIMED: ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping?

that is the only way to explain what im asking. sorry

also i was dyno tuned rich, would it still be possable to get pinging?

i was tuned with 94 octane in the tank. i ran a tank of 93 would 1 octane make a difference if i was tuned rich?

would you get pinging at idle?

i get a crackling sound at idle after the new cams. it sounds like it is comming from under the car. when i pop the hood an rev it i cant hear anythin coming from the motor.

also when i get on the throttle hard i get a prominant tapping sound.

what do you guys think?

Timing is the main thing that affects pinging. You should have your a/f ratio set properly but for other reasons.

Only if you timing was ridiculously advanced. Pinging occurs under load such as WOT or climbing hills.

Retard your timing, increase octane and see if it goes away.

You know the noise when you shut off an old ass station wagon or POS car, and it sits there and diesels for a while before it actually shuts off? It sounds like that. Or am I thinking detonation.

thats why its nice to have a flip switch ...I was wondering the same thing myself. In 5th at 35-40 I would get this "sound" almost a rattle but weird...so I swtitched it to the 87 tune in the middle of the rattle and it INSTANTLY went away. It wouldnt do it on the 87. Mined you this was BEFORE CAMS and BEFORE TIMS TUNE.

Um the cheapest thing to do is go down to a local motorcycle shop or drap strip and get a gallon of 100 octain unleaded race gas...see if that stopps it.

thanks guys. im figuring out what i want to do. anyway, it shouldnt be pinging because im dyno tuned and all, but i guess it could still be the case. i will figure it out, hopefully before it blows up.

any chance this could be an exhaust leak? Just thinking because you said with the hood open it didn't sound like it was coming from the engine and the exhaust leak would be prominent at idle and louder under acceleration.

yea ive run different gas since then, it still happens. not sure if it is an exhaust leak, i never had one so i really dont know what it sounds like.

i have to take the car out again to try it again, but i think if im go up in the revs slowly it dont happen. even up high like 5500 rpms. but if i bring it up to 5500 rmp fast by stomping the throttle then i hear the knocking. it is a timed reve matched knocking. as i step on it harder the knocking gets faster.

To me this still sounds like an exhaust leak. When the shop did your heads, they had to unbolt your headers. It is possible that the leak could be there. I had trouble with my LT's leaking after install and your description above fits what my problem was.
To be safe I would pull the chip first. If that doesn't do it, can you take it to the shop that did your heads and ask them what's up with that noise.

i have a custom grind blower cam, stage 1 with comp springs. i dont think that is the problem. cam is too small.

shop had everything down headers xpipe, so yea maybe they didnt put it back together good.

what will pulling the chip do? wont that mess things up? i know it will mess with the gearing, but what about my air fuel ratio? i cant take it out and drive it hard down the street if a/f is off?

i guess i will just have to take it back to the shop and have the tuner look it over.

i just didnt want to do that, cause now i feel like i i might have to go in there with some long tubes whlie its there. have them tighten every thing up and retune it.

im just broke right now. i not bring it back in till i get l/t to go in. i guess i will have to drive it less for a while.

a chip usually adds some timing , timing = increased detonation, and you know what detonation does.

I had pinging after my tune.

Changed the thermostat for a 180 and the pinging went away. I cleaned my MAF and it seemed to make the car even smoother.
