Need some advice on intake w/ AFR 185

Hey Stangnet, I just joined, usually I just read and read and read but I have some help I need from my fellow 5.0 bros

I currently have a stock 302 bottom end, and I have some ported stock heads w/ a trickflow street intake

OK, heres my delima::

My girlfriend w/ my cousin and bro just bought me some AFR 185 heads :D
YES IM STOKED!!!!! WHO WOULDNT BE!!!

but will those AFRs flow right on a stock bottom end, also I allready have a TFS intake and I found a REAL good deal on a GT-40 Cobra POLISHED intake locally in my area ($300) HELL YEAH  , so I had to scoop it!!!!

so what combo should I run now?

AFRs w/ Cobra intake

OR

AFRs w/ TRS

and depending on what intake, whats a good cam to use? (got a 5 speed)

Also I very ignorant when it comes to porting, so what needs to be ported, if at all.... Ive read ALOT on here that a Cobra lower once ported flows!!!

so I appreciate ANY and ALL help coming, cause I SURE DO NEED IT :bang: !!!!

Thanks EVERYONE!

:nice:

I think the 2.02 intake vavles on that head may cause piston-to-valve interferance - better check it with clay to be sure. You want minimum .100" exhaust and .080" intake clearance.

The Cobra intake is good, but from what I've researched the TFS is one of the best all-around intakes, which is why I recently got one. My $.02

TFS makes two intakes. Which intake is best depends on a LOT of other things. I have been posting an actual dyno comparison of a TW head, AFM N-41 cammed car that made more power with a stock explorer than the TFS Track Heat. Might not have been the case with a Street Heat, but we don't know cause the comparison was with a Track Heat.

Send you heads and intake off to be ported at the same time before you put them on your car because you'll end up wanting to do this eventually. Having the two ported at the same time also allow the machinest to port match which will get you a couple more hp. I also agree with a f303 cam and having you pistons flycut.

DONT think JUST the "AFR's " are going to make your car rock!! all that air flow and big ports WILL slow up velocity and you WILL lose the low end for street maners!! why dump 1200-1500 on heads NOW when all the rest needs attention!! No matter what you hear... HEADS ALONE ARENT the answer!! Get the GT intake and install a FMS E or B cam or some TFS cam ( advanced 4*)and you WILL be happeir than just raising the hood and have everyone drool over the heads... unless that is what you want... drool?? IF the AFRs are cheap.. then rock!! but heads alone with stock cam... you wont be where you think your going to be !! Cool??

Just me.....................

Guy recently installing a set of AFR185s along with heavily ported stock intake on a stock bottom end (stock cam). He made 130/305 fwhp/fwtq @ 2250 then peaked at 351rwtq at 3700rpm. Definitely proved big heads and small cam works well.

That would be ndmp40 - here is his dyno graph.............

I would sell both the intakes and buy an Edelbrock intake, they work best with AFR heads. As for the cam I would go custom unless you want to be smogable then I would go with an X cam, or a Comp Cam.

If you want to run the intake you have I'd say go with the street heat because the Cobra would be limiting you. I don't know if you want to run a trickflow cam with AFR heads as the cams are kind of designed around a "package". I would go with an F or X cam.
