Need Some help... I'm Overheating

Ok heres the deal my stang has been having a funny problem. Whenever I'm driving it the temp gauge is going up and down without any change in RPMs. It I know its not a gauge probmlem cause the engine was actually overheating. My first thought was that it was the thermostat B/C I have plenty of coolant and its 50 deg outside. But I just replaced the thermostat about 4 months ago? Is this whats going on or could it be something else like a leak or something. (It looks to me like I'm not loosing any coolant). She overheated so bad today that I barley made it home.

Any help would be great ASAP.

Do you have a clutch fan; if so it could be bad. If your sure your not losing coolant then you can pretty much rule out the water pump or blown head gasket. It could be the thermostat. You should flush your cooling system when you change it to eliminate any trash that might be clogging the system somewhere.

If the temperature is only 50 degrees you should not be overheating. When was the last time your radiator was flushed? It's quite likely the coolant is not flowing into the engine properly when the thermostat opens.

To make sure your head gasket isn't blown, check your oil dipstick for traces of coolant/water. Also, other way to check, let engine cool down, with cap off, fill up the raditor and then run and let it warm... watch for bubbles in the raditor which could also incidate blown gasket.

Re

Ok I filled the radiator back up with water, went and ate, and came back home, when I got home the temp gauge was back to normal but when I looked under the hood a lot of steam was shooting from around the top part of the radiator, I can't really see where its coming from, but I'm pretty sure its a leak now. Could it be possible that steam is coming out of the top of the radiator without the leak being there??

This is pisses me off

Your radiator is shot. You might be able to get it patched if you ahve a radiator shop. But I would buy a new one. It is only venting steam because it only leaks from the top when it is warmed up.

The reason your gauge is all of the place is that you are low on coolant.
