Need some help with brake lights...

My bros cougar's battery died and we had no clue why, well i jumped him and followed him home. As I am following him home, i noticed his brake lights never turned off, thus why the battery died. Anywaise, got home played with the pedal some, and everyonce in awhile it would turn off, but most the time stayed on, so I took out the stoplight switch and replaced it, but that didnt help at all. Im sorta lost now where to go from here, so if anyone has run into this problem before and has any advice/tips, I would be greatly appreciative. It's a 67 cougar with facoty power drums, converted to disc. Thanks guys

Ok, so If they stay on, that means that somewhere else the circut that makes the lights go on be being completed, so somewhere else the wires are exposed and touching, thus make the lights stay on. And the reason why they go off some times is cuz the move slightly and brake the connection. Does that like what it could be? back out to the garage

NOPE, not likely. Those switches are a bitch, there are also several different switches that all look the same.

Do they go off when you unplug the switch? If they do the switch is at fault. Try returning the switch and buying one from another vender, their listing may be wrong.

What he said!

Those switches always drove me up a wall.
They have to be installed just so, then installed securely so they don't revert to the wrong position.
If memory serves, they should be lightly lubed as well. I think I used dielectric grease.
Been lots of years though...

Well, the brake lights stay on when its un plugged sometimes...Infact, one time just gettin into the car and sitting down, not even touchin the pedal, made the brake lights come on, so all I can figure is there is something out of wack with the wiring. But yah, those switches are a pain, good tip on the lube. But now I think the switch was never bad, I think 37 year old wires are cuasing the problem who knows, If I find nowhting, ill try another switch. Who else sells them, only napa around here had them.
