He picked up his 96 cobra with 50k miles a few weeks ago and noticed some tranny problems. It seems to always grind going into 5th gear, sometimes after it's been driven awhile it won't do it. We changed the tranny fluid to Royal Purple synchromax and adjusted the shifter stops, but that didn't help. I'm not sure what it is but I'm guessing it's the synchros. Also, when it's shut off and you put it in 5th gear, the car will still roll. Anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong??

Well the thing still rolling in 5th gear is just because the weight of the car over comes the compression of the engine. Just put it in first gear instead. The synchronizers in most of these cars are made from Carbon Fiber. He's likely cracked a synchro, or badly damaged it. Nothing you can do, but tear the transmission apart and change that synchronizer. It's not as hard as it seems.

On a T5, that ring is bronze, not sure about the T45. You may even be able to pull the tailhousing off the tranny in the car and change it out that way, but the best bet would be to yank the whole thing out that way you can open it up and check for signs of other wear as well.

Good luck!

You're thinking brass. The older T-5s it's brass, the later ones are carbon fiber. I honestly don't know what the T-45 has in it. Either way, it has to be changed.
