Need your opinion on a decision about SC vs Bolt ons

I have been giving this decision a lot of thought and need your guys opinions to help me out. Tell me if my reasoning is correct here...

I was thinking at first to go with all the bolt ons (headers,plenum,TB,CAI,Xcal2 tune) which would cost me about $1500 or so. I definately want to go SC in the future, how soon would depend on how quick i save up. So i was ready to drop all this cash next month for bolt ons to tie me over.

BUT.. then i started thinking, the max the stock internals can handle safely is around 385-390 rwhp with a good tune. I should easily be able to get that with just a SC, right? Whether or not i do all bolt ons first. So whats the benefit of bolt ons when a SC can be boosted to give me the max power my engine can handle. So now I am thinking that save that $1500 from bolt ons and wait till this summer and just go SC'd. Maybe i can even find a deal on a decent used SC and get it sooner. Whats the point of having bolt ons if i am limiting my self to the boost of the SC since it might blow my engine.

Am i correct with this idea of thinking?

BTW i already have catback, x pipe, under drive pulleys. So at least stuff is flowing somewhat more free than stock which should help the SC be more effecient.

There is no decision to be made...

Blow it and be done with it and dont regret it.... just save for internals from that point on and pray you dont boom.
+1. smart guy.

you can easily get 400hp out of a Vortech S or SQ trim, or Paxton Novi 2000. Thats exactly what I'm doing. All those bolt-ons will only compliment the blower set-up. The problem is, once you get closer to 400, the more bolt-ons you have, the more power, so they could put you over that threshold and into the "danger zone" if you will. The only bolt-ons I'd do with a blower would be a 75mm T/B and Plenum and Full exhaust. The Tune is what will be the difference between blowing your engine and running it safely at 380-400hp. To be on the safe side I want to stay right around 380.

Give MPH a call and order a Mongoose kit. He has a few hundred cars running a Mongoose kit with stock bottom and has never lost an engine, and its because of their tune. Its ALL in the TUNE!

of course, Hotmustang331 will chime in and tell you to stay N/A. with his numbers and new times, I can see why he feels that way. very impressive on his part.

but my vote is run a Novi 2000 Mongoose kit @ 8psi, and save for forged internals of a built short block, and maybe even ported heads. Im done with boltons until my bottom end is forged. until then Im going with the Novi.

Forced Induction isnt the end all to making horsepower, but its a lot easier with these engines.

Oh, the car is a 2002 GT 5spd, and i also have 3.55 gears. which should be good if i go S/C.

I understand the point that bolt ons would definately help the S/C work efficiently and deliver more HP, but i wouldnt really need it, since i would be at the max potential of my stock internals. Right?

Also, i am definately going to go with MPH mongoose kit with either the NOVI or vortech Sq, what psi would i have to be running to hit about 385rwhp?

about 8-10psi will be fine on a stock motor, thats what MPH told me when I asked. i'll probably stick to 8psi to play it safe.

Supercharger for sure. I'd only do full exhaust, gears, and a short throw before getting one. You might also consider some suspension mods as well such as LCAs and Subframes to help the car handle the new power.

Go with the SC...........................
I just went 12.90 spinning/pedalling 2nd and spinning in 3rd and letting off at 1100' with STOCK gears on my "Street" tune (about 350 rwhp). When I get my AFR right I should easily be in the 12.5's:flag:

You've twisted my arm guys.:D

Supercharger it is. Now only if i can actually stay away from my money, not spend it, and save some more by the summer to get the S/C. Its going to be hard, but man is it going to be sweet.

STAY N/A! STAY N/A!!!!!!! LOL J/K just had to hahah. You will love being S/Cd. I just dont want the worry of my engine letting go everytime I nail it. Now I have a car that trappes almost 109 and is completely safe and reliable. 10 passes and no problems at all. :D

Not to hijack the thread, but I was looking at your times hotmustang331. I just got Patriot heads (stage 2) and patriot stage 2 cams. I have ud pulleys, full exhaust and 3.73's. I am being told I should get around 320 RWHP. Should I expect 12.5's?

I hope so :) I have a few local LS1's to pick on. :D

If you have a suspension set up for drag racing, have done some weight reduction, and know how to drive, it is very possible with sticky tires. It is impossible to know without knowing your setup.

I dissagree with this at least as far as exhaust bolt-ons. Most boltons only free up power not produce it like a power adder, so by adding say, headers and full exhuast, you have not put any more stress on the internals.
