Hey guys, heres the deal. My 93's tranny needs at least new syncros in 2nd gear and or major repair. My car is down right now and I just want it back before next spring (I live in Michigan, home of bad winters). Money is a factor right now, I am trying to build a new house so every penny is like pulling teeth. What is the cheapest yet still efficient way for me to go at this point? New tranny, rebuild on old tranny used tremec on ebay??? My ride is a 93 relatively stock hatchback with a T5 and factory h/c/i & gears. Thanks in advance bruthas.

Well the only place I go is www.ddperformance.com they are in Wixom. Don Walsh and his crew will set you up with exactly what you need. Since your pretty much stock I would have them just freshen yours up now if your tight on cash. If you add H/C/I and blower later on and it breaks again due to too much power then I'd upgrade to a TKO 500- or tko-600 then.

if interested, Jrichker has posted some links with info on rebuilding a T5 yourself. at least you could read up and see if it is something you might want to tackle. also, some of the threads have prices for various components used in the rebuild.

good luck.

How involved is going through a stock T5 yourself? I have never done any type of tranny work, but I consider myself higher than the norm on comprehension and mechanics. Is it no mans land and something you take in to have done or a do it yourself weekend job? Any good links on how to?

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm for parts
OR
http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

There is a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. If http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ are out of stock see http://cartapes.com. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

You will also need a magnetic base and dial indicator to measure the endplay ($20-$40). See http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNPDFF?PMPAGE=1290.

The tricky part is that you will need some shims to adjust the endplay in the two shafts: the new bearings will change the clearance. There is no way of telling what it will be until you get to the point that it is time to measure and check the clearances. Halon has the individual shims if you can wait for them. If you can't afford the wait, the auto parts store can sell you some shim stock and you can make your own, or have a machine shop make them for you. The shim stock comes in brass (easy to cut) and steel, in varying thicknesses.
