I used to think modding my mustang was cool but now I think it is a waste of time and money. About a year ago when I first got my 2003 Mustang GT Vert, I thought is was pretty fast. Not Coupe fast but still pretty fast. I started catching the mod bug and before I knew it, I had a Superchip, Flowmaster mufflers, B&M Shifter and a Mac Cold Air. I was able to run an average of 14.3 and a best of 14.0 with about a 2.2 60ft. Then I replaced the Mac cold air with the C&L Maf + truflow and added Steeda Underdrive Pulleys to get an average of 14.8 and a best of 14.4 with about 2.2 60ft. About a month ago, I added Subframes and 4.10 gears to get my new worst tonight of 15.2 average and best of 14.7. I give up. The other thing that I noticed with the 4.10 gears is that now my buddy passes me in the 1/4 mile with his 2000 TransAm even though I get a good jump on him from the start. Where as before, I would still get a good jump on him but he would only get even with me at the end of the 1/4 mile. He is stock running average of 14.2 just like he did 1 year ago. Is it me or did I loose something after 60mph with the 4.10 gears?

Possibly the chip....No reason you should be getting SLOWER.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe even pull the C&L off and get a tune instead of the chip. Bottom line, your losing hp when you added a mod or two somewhere along the line. After what mod did you get slower. That's where to look.

unfortunately 95+% of the time a C&L MAF will make you slower, i little test at the track netter me a .2 loss and 2 MPH loss w/ C&L (2 runs with it, and 2 strait runs w/o it no cool down time). I know it's not very technical, but it was enough to get me to get rid of it. And did you get a dyno'd chip? or just ordered one online? It could be tuned slightly wrong, just things to think about.
You didn't mention you 60 foot after gears, usually if you get 4.10's and no sticky tires your 60 foots will suffer. Just ideas

Well, the chip was the first thing on and I got a 14.0 so I don't think it is the chip. I did spin more with the 4.10 gears but my 60ft did not change so how could that affect me? I don't know just did not get what I thought I would with the 4.10 gears. Before I put in the 4.10 gears, my buddy could not pass me up untill 100mph. Now I watch him catch and walk run away from me at 70.... He is still in 3rd gear while I am now in 4th. Maybe I should have stayed with the 3.27 gears. I don't know. The really bad thing is that the Gear swap was the most expensive thing I have done to the car and it seems to have made it worse. I just don't know.

I thought 4:10's would cost you mph, but get you though the quarter faster.
Could be wrong.

MPH is horsepower, so if you lost mph after the C&L, take it off and see if that improves or times, or go to a dyno and do it. Couple of pulls is only 70-100 bucks.

Do most people get slower in the 1/4 with 4.10s? My best with 3.27's was 14.002. (In the Bullitt) I really hope i dont get slower...I know you have to be more carefull, but i thought they pull much harder...Mike

if traction isnt an issue then a lower gear will get you better times, and the chip/C&L maf combo is hurting your hp and possibly damaging your engine, most chips lean out your a/f ratio and advance timing, all the c&l does is lean you out more, so u might be running very lean and hurting your engine in the process which might explain your downward spiral of 1/4 times

Your choice of mods are horrible. Off-the-shelf chips, C&L MAFs, and metal intake pipes absolutely suck. There is little power to be had from pulleys also.

get rid of all that **** except the pullies, get a midpipe at least. i would keep the superchip for now but definately dump the induction stuff and go to stock. What do your slips look like? Im sure weather is playing a role too. 4.10s are easy to drive on street tires once you get a feel for them

As the others said, bad choice of mods. Dont waste your cash on CAI crap and definately not a new MAF. If you really insist on changing the MAF then I'd get a dyno tune. I'm betting your AF is screwed from the MAF, and you need to learn how to drive the 4.10s. Do you have a tri-ax? Might help your driving. Do what the others said, get rid of the C&L junk.

His 60 ft isn't terrible with stock gears. 2.2 One track I go to everyone calls Slippery Rock just because no one can hook up.

Why don't you suggest the best way to get better 60ft times?

sig

2.2s do suck, but once you get the hang of it 2.0s are easy and then 1.9s and with a good track 1.8s

Yep. I don't understand changing out the MAF on a stock engine. Like you said, if you change it, you need to dyno tune it. Never had a C&L just because I've read the MAF's are inconsistant. The Ford 90MM MAF is supposed to be an excellent one if you need a new MAF because of mods.

The funny thing about the maf is that about a year ago, everyone was saying that they were awesome. 15 hp guarranteed with dynos to prove it. Now everyone has changed their minds and say they are ****. I personally feel I lost something when I went from the mac full cold air to the maf but I thought it was just me. I agree that I need to learn to launch better and get my 60ft time down more. On factory tires I spin like a b**ch now with 4.10 gears. Tried feathering the gas, launching at 2500, 1500, 1000, nothing seemed to help. I raced my buddy's transam 6 times and each time I beat him out of the hole but about mid track he passed me up which never happened until the 4.10 gears. I had all the other mods just no 4.10 gears. Now he would catch me near the quarter and if we raced farther than that I was dead but now it is mid track and I get to look at his tail lights for the other half of the track. Why did I loose so much power in 3rd and 4th gear from changing to 4.10 gears? How can I get it back without changing back to 3.27 gears?

Gears just convert power to the track.
You most likely lost power when you put on the C&L MAF. Go back to stock intake or at least your stock MAF. Also with the 4.10's you going to need DR's. Nitto 555R's at 18 pounds (at the track) will know 3 to 4 tenths off your time and help you launch hard.
