New 4.10 Gears and New Worst track times!

Well, the chip was the first thing on and I got a 14.0 so I don't think it is the chip. I did spin more with the 4.10 gears but my 60ft did not change so how could that affect me? I don't know just did not get what I thought I would with the 4.10 gears. Before I put in the 4.10 gears, my buddy could not pass me up untill 100mph. Now I watch him catch and walk run away from me at 70.... He is still in 3rd gear while I am now in 4th. Maybe I should have stayed with the 3.27 gears. I don't know. The really bad thing is that the Gear swap was the most expensive thing I have done to the car and it seems to have made it worse. I just don't know.

Well there is your problem. I would never do a chip first. After you add more mods, you need to reburn the chip to get optimal performance out of your new mods. So i would get gears, exhaust, etc, and do the chip LAST. And get a tune.

As for the 3.73s.... 4.10s are fine and if you like going to the track, which it seems you do, i would not go down to 3.73s at all.

EDIT: On a personaly note, i can say i wasn't too happy with my 4.10 gears either on my last 98GT. I think i am going to do gears LAST on this new 02 GT i have.

EDIT 2: When i had my 4.10s in my 98GT (Automatic) i raced my friends 03 Lexus IS300 and i launched from 1500-1700 RPM and i had Tire spin for a SPLIT second, and then all launch and i took off perfectly...

get it through your head, its not the gears

gears MULTIPLY torque. thats what they do. im tending to agree with everyone else, i think you just need some practice. you are also shifting one more time in the 1/4 with 4.10s than you are with 3.27s, and with a not-so-hot-driver, you could be losing a good .3-.4 from that one horrible shift. and about the launch, you just need to practice so you dont just sit there and spin, but a little spin is not all bad. as long as you dont bog. if you have stock tires, that may be a huge factor too. i got my 4.10s w/ stock tires, and i totally tore em up in about 5k miles. i now run 275 kuhmos all around and the traction is night and day from the stockers. i know kuhmos are a relatively cheap tire, but they are amazing if you have never experienced a performance tire before. just dont blame the gears. they arent the problem. and def get a nice o/r pipe. x for power, h for sound

Why not go with the tire that will give you the best traction? Nice times on a heavy ass vert. Stock internals? You Florida guys seem to run damn fast.

Noticed your in Florida. You probably have better tracks to run as it's year round operation.

well if you use drag radials to their potential(1.7s on 17's), you are going to break an axle. So if you are going to risk breaking an axle you might as well throw on some slicks and get a lot better times for the same money.

Well, slicks don't work well for a daily driver. I am looking for an enclosed car hauler so I don't have to worry about breakage. If I do break an axle, I'll get a Explorer carrier and new axle's.

there are plenty of sets of barely used slicks on cheap wheels for 300-350. the price for some drag radials mounted and balanced

The funny thing about the maf is that about a year ago, everyone was saying that they were awesome. 15 hp guarranteed with dynos to prove it. Now everyone has changed their minds and say they are ****.

I was a believer in the C&L until I went and got dynoed. That POS had my a/f ratio bouncing all over the place like a roller coaster. It would go from 15:1 and dip down to 12:1, etc, etc. I ripped it off and my a/f went to a flat 12:1. We tuned it to 13:1 across the board and I ended up with 258 rwhp and 296 rwtq. My only power mods are an off-road h-pipe, K&N FIPK and pulleys. Keep your 4.10s. They will make you faster once you figure out a new launching technique and shift points.

The stock axle will hold up A LOT more than you think. My friend Dale has a 01 GT with a Vortech and he's leaving the line at 5K on M/T ET Streets(which are pretty much just like slicks) with the stock axle and 3.73's. He's got over 150 passes and the car like this.

I never heard you mention anything about the air temps,humidity, track prep conditions and elevation Sideout. That can have a lot of impact on how good, or bad you car will perform. I think that it's possibly that or it could also be like mentioned before something else screwed up the way you cars is running. As for the 4.10's being to much I say . My times got better after I got mine installed and my 60' times went from averages of 2.4's down to 2.0's on street tires still spinning a little. It's not the gears! I'm not trying to sound like a Dick either, but it could possibly be YOU. Racing with 4.10's AT THE TRACK, is a lot different than 3.27's. You have top re learn how to launch AND Shift.

you all are pu$$ies, cept for the guys who said you dont need DRs or slicks. i have pulled 1.9s on stock susp., stock tires with 4.10s. its not the gears, its not the tires, its the driver.

Ditch the MAF, not necessary on a N/A mod motor until major other work has been done. Wasted money.

great, that means he's about a 100 passes behind me and 1000rpm less per launch. My rear broke on my car back n april. Axles tend to snap with drag radials and a dead hook. Rears tend to fail over time with slicks...just a pattern ive noticed for a while.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I know sooner or later it's going to give out on him. I'm just saying the stock rear is a lot stronger than most people think,Even on Dr's and slicks. That's the reason I went with 31 splines in mine because of the fact that I'll be running DR's next year. I'm assuming that he's only launching at 5K because of the Vortech. The car runs consistent 12.2's and has gone 12.13@114 on pump gas. Sorry to somewhat hi-jack this thread BTW

BTW The reason he doesn't have that many passes on it yet, is because he just got the car finished in late June and it's been kind of ****ty weather here this summer. Either to humid or rainy.

with a vortec, you should leave the line higher.

drag radials will break axles more than slicks(if used correctly)

i broke my rear after 7 passes on nitto drag radials and 5 grand launches.

Ok.. I agree that I need to learn how to drive better with the 4.10 gears. I will also try pulling off the Maf and returning it back to stock with a dropin K&N filter. One of the reasons I kept all the stock parts and did not sell anything on Ebay. I may have been venting a little bit since I was hoping to finally get into the 13's but did worse. The $400+ for the gears kinda hurt also, but hopefully with practice, I can get the gains I was hoping for with them. Since I have stock tires instead of $700 for tires right now, any advice would be appreciated on how to launch to get 2.0 or lower 60ft times. Also, when I shift from 1st to 2nd, what rpm so that I don't spin again?

my stock rearend gave up on my 15th pass with drag radials.....with the eaton, and 31splines...my rearend loves abuse now!!!
