New Car!

Hey guys, I'm 17 and just bought my second mustang. I'm a huge mustang fan, and am always reading these forums. My first car was a 95 Mustang V6 auto, but three weeks ago i bought a Dark Green 1994 Mustang GT 5-speed. I've got a good job, and have a good amount of money for a teenager, and was wanting some tips to get my car some more horsepower. I'd like to go bolt-ons first. I really want to get some weld-in flowmasters, but i have to pay off my dad before i start fixing it up. Keep in mind the car does have 125,000 miles, but it drives great. It does ping, and wants to die when it gets hot, so theres some things that might need fixing first. Your input would be appriciated. Thanks!

Start running premium gas and see if it stops pinging.

Looks good man, welcome to stangnet.

Read the sticky at the top of the page about a 180* thermostat and other cooling tips. You should be able to stop the pinging.

Thats for the input so far. Some things i'd like to do with it are a cold air intake, pulleys, and an exhaust. Just some bolt-ons for starters. I'd like to get a cobra rr hood, with a cobra front bumper, and chrome Y2K cobra wheels. Also, lowering it is an option. Any input will be appriciated.

Cold air intake does nothing for hp. Exhaust help out alot when getting rid of the cat's. What's you budget like? Exhaust can get pricey depending on brand.

I've got money, but i must pay off the car before i start modding it. I still owe around $700. I can have it paid off in a couple of weeks. I would like to start out with weld-in flowmasters, cai or k&n, and definatly get some gears in the near future, but i've heard they kill gas milage?

ok, i have two questions. I would like to get a shifter, and gears. I was wondering how bad gears hurt your gas milage? Also, how much difference does a shifter make, and what would be the best one to get?

Gears only hurt your gas mileage if you take adavntage of the new acceleration too often.

And I still have the stock shifter. So I don't really have an opinion on those.

A shifter would make the car more enjoyable to drive. Did you really buy a stang for gas mileage or for fun? Gear it and watch the kool aid smile form quite quickly.

pro 5.0, gears might make you have 1-2 mpg less no big deal.

wytstang your right, i didnt buy it for the gas milage, or i would've kept my V6. thanks for the input. I'll look more into getting gears, what would be the best ratio to get?

3.73 are the best all around performance and livable drivability imo. At about 70mph your RPM will be around 2300rpm's this will let you listen to your exhaust and not your girl friend .

I dont wanna hurt my cooling with underdrive pulleys, so i'm not sure about those, also, i'm pretty sure that the car is stock, and hasent had the timing messed with, but it might have been. But i dont have the timing stuff to check it, and change it. But any input on underdrive pulleys would be helpful.
