The reason why it was considered a flop is because they made it a 4 door. Power isn't what it should be, either. Making an automatic version was another mistake (that's where the chick part comes in).
Drive it year round. I've seen more than a few RX-8s booting around in the salt around here. It's good for what it is, but don't modify it. You won't get much more out of it.
