New Clutch...

My clutch is shot and I'm wondering what to go with. I like the Centerforce dual friction and everyone seems to say only good things about it...My other option is the Ford Racing King Cobra clutch...I can get the Centerforce clutch, flywheel, and BBK quadrant kit for around $700 OR I can get the Jegs/Ford Racing complete kit with all that and the King Cobra clutch for about $450...Any suggestions guys? Big price difference, wondering how good the King Cobra is...

The King Cobra is a very good street/strip clutch up to 400-450 HP. Light pedal effort, engages smoothly and launches hard enough when you want it to.

Always liked the SPEC Clutches. Never had a problem with the ones I have owned (Stage II & Stage III) Be sure to also pick up an SFI Approved Flywheel:nice: Combo works real real nice.

I really can't say enough about the king cobra (the real one-not the ebay knock off) Minimal pedal effort and it grabs really well. You won't be disappointed. It is an excellent street/part time strip clutch as Jrichker said. Make sure when you got all that crap out of there that you inspect the rear main for leakage. It is much easier to change while you are already in there.

the king cobra clutch is rated 30% above stock, which put's it at 300-350 tops, beyond that, there is no gaurantee, some run it successfully, others lunch it on the first launch....I certainly wouldn't run one about 300-350 at the flywheel.

without the shot, the kc would be great, otherwise, go with that centerforce.....stay away from the spec clutches, they hit too hard and will destory your tranny.

I cant say enough about the spec stage II clutch i have. The clutch grabs VERY hard no matter how hot it is...The pedal effort is a little hard...but that is to be expected from a stronger clutch, but its perfectly managable on the street. The pedal action is extremely precise which eliminates the mushy and often irregular engagement point you get with Ford products. The DF clutch is also a great piece...but dont disregard spec because "they hit too hard and will destroy your tranny" good luck man

lol, yea don't disregard a $200 clutch because it will destroy a $1500 tranny.......the ONLY time I ever recommend these clutches is if you're at the actual power level they handle, which you are no where close with those mods....with your power level you're at a kc clutch or centerforce dual friction...

don't get me wrong, I LOVED the feel of the spec, however if the clutch is not your weakest link in your drivetrain, then your trans is, and that's simple physics

Wow...this guy knows everything huh. FYI the spec Stage II is 300 bucks and the S-trim sitting in my closet is going on the car in a couple months and at that point i'll be at the right power level, unless you think otherwise?! There's nothing wrong with building a combo with the future in mind. Building a nice, well rounded car is a timely process...everything cant be done at once...especially on a budget. so why not put a nice clutch in there like a DF or a Spec and not have to worry about it once you throw a blower or nitrous on the car?? Im not trying to be an a$$ but perhaps you should read a little more than you write...or "recommend"

I guess with that being said where are you trying to go with your car 5-2-Floor? If you plan on going big with your motor then get a clutch that will benefit you in the future as well. That way you dont have to do it twice. I ran a Spec Stage II clutch in my 92' 5.0 with H/C/I w/ a stock T5 and never had a problem and I would bang the **** out of it at the track and on the street. If you race you always have to be preparred to do break something plain & simple. True a Spec is a real grabby clutch but I like that. The car just wants to get in gear and go! That dont mean you always have to shift like your rippin off a 1/4 mile.
I say base your decision off what your future mods are gonna be and the time frame you plan on doing it. You cant really go wrong with any of those clutches, but depending how big you go might impact how many times you have to change it out..........

lol, look man, no need to get emotional over this, I'm simply stating the fact....No need to take it from me, give both tremec and gforce a call and ask them which spec you should run with their trannies....they'll BOTH tell you to never run a spec with their product, and they're both known for bullitproof setups.....Why is this? the simple facts I've stated.

Argue as you want, I've stated the simple facts which can be backed up with any amount of research...I'll state it again, the weak link in your drivetrain MUST be the clutch.. If it is not, the next weekest thing will go, which is the trans. Again, simple physics. that spec is way stronger than the trans in your car.

there are better clutches out there for hi hp applications, the spec is not one of them.

It's normal to get defensive over a purchase, it's hard earned money and I understand that, I'm in the same boat as you are.

Perhaps you should not be so open to criticize me.....I've "read" more on mustangs than you will likely ever read in your entire life.

However, what seperates the two of us, is that I don't just read, I do. I do ALL my own work, whether it's rebuilding a t5, or a motor. I've done aod to t5 swaps, several explorer motor swaps, rebuilt t5's, and I've used and tested numerous clutches including YES, 2 spec clutches, a centerforce dual friction clutch, 2 hd frpp clutches, 2 frpp king cobra clutches, a generic brand, stock brand ram, you name it.

My statements are backed from experience, and not from "reading"

Take it for what you will, I'm done here. I simply wanted to state my opinions and the facts for what they are.

I don't like specs, you do. However, when that trans breaks, just don't call me up to fix it..Jeremy

Im not getting defensive over my purchase, i have driven each one of the clutches you mentioned excpet RAM and i researched clutches for weeks, which is why i bought the spec. I really enjoy precise clutch action, it makes driving the car so much more enjoyable. If you want a sloppy feeling clutch then get a FRPP product...simple as that. Centerforce are great clutches...especially the DF...but i just didnt like the feel as much as i did with the specs. I also dont find the need to bang gears at anytime except for the track...therefore im not too worried about tearing up a tranny. chill out big guy

lol sorry guys no need to fight...i did read everyone's response though, and I myself like the DF and the KC...ill be puttin on an edelbrock intake and eventually AFR heads, but the heads wont come for another 6 months or so...right now im on a budget and im trying to get my car on the road as soon as possible so im leaning towards the KC complete kit...think it will do alright once i throw on the edelbrock intake?
