OK, I have a few miles on the new 306, so I took it to the dyno on Sat. I knew it was stronger than the 289 but how much I wasn't sure. So after some carb jetting and timing adjustments she put down 265 RWHP and 270 RWTQ. I was hoping for 300 RWHP, but behind the C-4 just a little too much drag, maybe behind a T-5 it could do it. Although 265 put's the HP at the crank around 370, so I can't complain. It will light up both back tires which is fun, although the wheel hop is not. It is definatly a screamer. I have it limited to 6K and it gets there fast with a very smooth TQ and HP curve. Having done most of this build up myself, I have fully realized just how expensive it is to build horesepower, but have enjoyed the experience. It has never been more fun owning this car than it is right now. It runs and drives incredibly.

getting 300+hp and tq is possible through an automatic. i pulled 300+ out of a 306 and AOD with a pretty basic combo...see sig below!

306 hyper pistons, custom ground cam, cheap headers and rpm old style intake, edelbrock aluminum heads, 1.6 rockers and 750dp carb. just took some tuning so don't give up... those AFR can see those numbers with no problem!


also 265 at the wheels is about 300-310 flywheel horsepower

If you are making 265 RWHP that translates to ~331 flywheel HP, not 370. Have you done any fine tuning and tweaking? Carb ajdustments and timing can make a huge difference.

What dyno did you go to???

My first combo, a 289 with stock heads put out 305 with a c-4 at Superiors dyno,then I changes cams and heads and got a cool 197

Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about what a dyno says. Take it to the track, and find the mph, this will give you a real world estimate of HP. Autos just dyno funny. My buddy dynoed at 380 to the rear in a fox body and stick, but I was faster than he was by quite a bit. And I dynoed more than 100hp less than he did.

is it a dynojet or a mustang dyno? I think mustang dyno's come in about 20 hp lower (well, at least in the general range we're talking about) than dynojets. Regardless, dont' bother trying to extrapolate what your power is at the flywheel - every transmission is different, and as I stated in a very long-winded and detailed manner in a recent thread, these rules of thumb are only so accurate. You've got a stout small block that should be fun to drive, for sure.

A general rule of thumb is 20% for drive trane loss with an automatic. Which would put you around the 330 mark.

What are the specs on your cam, and what gears are you running?

My car put down around 340 and was able to pull a 12.13 weighing in at ~3400 lbs.

Gears affect dyno numbers, some dyno's register differently, and a loose torque converter will fool a dyno, too.

I went from a 4500 stall to a 4000 stall and gained 30 hp because it was a tighter converter.

For what it is worth, the guys running the dyno told me it is closer to 29% for auto's and 18 for manual. Personally, I don't know. My Tq Converter is a 2400 and gears are 3:55 with a powertrax locker. The 289 pulled 217 on the same dyno with the AFR's and other mods. So picking up the other 50hp has been fun.

Besides a cam, which I'm not really willing to change, I can't think of anything else to do to it to make it better (street wise) with the exception of a power adder. It is built pretty solid. I'd like to get it to a track to see what it would do and to get a "real" hp figure.

Depending on traction, race weight, and other variables, that's probably a 13.0-13.2 car (give or take). I ran 12.4's all day long when I dyno'd at 311. I'm geared differently, but I bet it's fun to drive!

The one thing that could easily help you get to your goal would be a cam that's just the next step bigger than your current one.

That's the one thing I don't like about my car, I can't really drive it on the street anymore. I think I'm gonna convert it to roller, but stay with the same general specs.

With 29% loss, that puts me around 480, NICE! I don't know how accurate that is, though.
