New efi engine Fit Question

I have a line on an NOS Ford 5.0 engine that was manufactured to go into an explorer for fairly cheap. Production year is 1996. Longblock is complete (intake to oil pan) minus computer and harness. Wondering if there are any issues using this engine in my 1968? I have a harness out of a 93 GT and was planning on swapping the cam if I bought the engine. Anyone who's done this and could lend some input would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
That long block should be just fine as far as I know. other than the normal dipstick relocations and such that are common with mustang 5.0s.

I believe those year engines were distributorless as well. It sounds like you will not be going distributorless since you are going to use the harness out of a 93 GT. If that is the case let me know if you have the oil pump drive in the block still. It basically looks like a hacked off distributor with a sensor on top. I am converting my mustang to distributorless and I would be happy to take it off your hands for a few bucks. PM me if interested.

The Expolrer EFI poses a challenege too as opposed to 87-93 mustang stuff. In addition to being distributorless they also use a returnless fuel system and have an OBDII EEC. None of the sensors swap with the 87-93 mustang stuff and the OBDII is VERY complicated to convert as ford heavily integrated it into the vehicle harness. I suggest using the Explorer long block( Keep the explorer intake its very good) in conjunction with a complete 87-93 mustang EFI electronics and fuel system.

For all intents and purposes, you have a '93 Cobra engine with a funky cam. Take that '93 harness and see how many connections plug straight in. One thing that comes to mind is having to relocate either a charge air temp sensor or a coolant temp sensor.


very few or none will plug in! If my memory is correct EVERYTHING electronic is different, been there done that. The 94 and 95 Mustang 5.0 motors also have different sensors that dont connect with the 87-93 mustang harnesses.

If thats the case, then I guess a trip to a pick-n-pull is in order so the parts can come from an '89-93 5.0 Mustang with mass air. Ideally one would have an old pull-out 5.0 engine to switch everything over from. Usually the Fox3 people will use only the Explorer longblock and intake anyway.

These days I think its funny when someone wants to install EFI. I went from a carbed '65 to my '89 and came to the conclusion that electronic engine management is a huge PITA, especially when it comes to modifications. Now I'm going back to(and staying with) carburation with the '68.

There are only a couple at most that will not plug in directly. The sensor locations are still relatively the same. The ones that do not plug in a generally just a different shaped plug. YOu can either change the harness or change the sensor.

To some extent youre correct, if you are doing a stock motor conversion its usually trouble free if done correctly. Once you enter the world of modified motors you really need to do your homework to get 100% satisfaction. Theres a large number of people who have returned back to carbs or left the EFI and returned the motor to stock out of frustration, I was at that point too at one point and stuck it out and am glad I did. Toss a modified motor, long tube headers and aftermarket mass air meters in the mix and a professional tune is a must, as are top quality sensors. The information that comes out of the EEC is only as good as the information it recieves. If you have a reputable tuner burn a chip and use a OEM mass air meter from a s/c lightning or something equivalent(IMO the Lightning maf is the best) the driveability can be amazing with some pretty wild engine combos.

Most of what I said was just opinion and based on my experiences with my car coupled with a few years of reading on this and other boards. I wont deny that EFI can do many things a carburetor cannot. I just prefer the simplicity and low cost over all-out performance/economy since I'm not worrying about smog anymore.

blue66 - they are easy to mod if you know what needs to be done. Like TT670 said, though, after you get some considerable mods on there you probably seed to start digging in the fuel maps. For that you need a twEECer or stand-alone and to know what you're doing......and there isnt a ton of public knowledge on programming a specific EFI. Fox3s are popular because 1. they are newer and 2. there are more of them. I see more mod motor Mustangs than Fox3s, though.
 
68modstang, I did this swap a couple of years ago. I used a '93 style harness like you have. I also had to buy a '93 style fuel rail and distributor. I could not use the oil pan either, but I was installing it in a FOX Mustang. Not sure about vintage fit ?
The cam in the Explorer motor is the truck cam. They have decent torque, but not as much HP as the GT(200hp I think). I used a E303. I found that the valve springs on the Explorer heads would float the valves with this cam. They are softer than GT springs. I used Motorsport springs for the E cam.

I believe the explorer had the same 5 litre distributorless Windsor that Ford installed in all V8 Falcons in Australia from 96 to 2003.

The pic is of a 220KW motor in my 66 convertable. I used all the wiring, fuel pump,eec and body computer from the donor car, runs great. (the intake is custom the fuel rail is vortec)

Marshal, wondering were I could get some more information on the mods. you did on your motor. Just getting started on my 67 fastback, but would really like to go 351W possibly without being forced to go cowl hood. This type ignition system/intake would be great. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks [email protected]
