This works on my 2003 GT Automatic.

Ok, we all know about the intake silencer. Its debated, some say it helps, some say it hurts. Either way, the object is to get more air into the engine. One problem still remains, we're drawing air into the engine compartment via the fender. There is a small hole at the bottom of the right fender so that air can get in. This hole is tiny. To see it, take out your airbox. Take a look into the hole that the silencer normally extends into. At the bottom of that "gap" in the fender, there is a tiny hole, the size of a half dollar or a quarter maybe.

Take a hack saw and get under your car. I cut a few little notches extending outwards from this hole. Then I bent them up making tabs. I did it enough to about double the size of this hole. It can be done much further, you can make the air intake hole under your inner right fender probably nearly 5 inches long and 3 inches wide.

With only double the size of a quarter dollar, I did feel a little more power. Not much maybe, but enough for this 30 second job to be worth it. I'm wondering if I made the hole 5 inches long and 3 inches wide if I'd pickup more power.

Remember, to see this hole you have to get under the front right rear fender and look up.

Anyone else do this, or did I invent a free mod? :D Anyone elses take? Anyone wanna try it and compare findings with me?

If its the piece Im thinking of, you might have just set yourself up for one heck of a mess lol. That piece you are cutting on helps keep water and mud, and other debris from getting up into your air filter. I see what your saying about how it can increase air flow, but think of what else it can increase the chance of getting in there. Especially if you have a fender mounted CAI system. Maybe enlarging it a touch wouldnt hurt, but if you do to much, I would think that you could do more harm then good.
It was just a thought, we might not even be thinking of the same piece.

Is this unique to '03's, 'cause I can push my K&N through the hole in mine. All I do is pull the inner fender liner down a bit, and bam, I'm in. Also, I think the only thing you've done is chop up your car. There are plenty of air gaps and miscellaneous openings for air to flow thru to get to the in-fender filter. You don't need to increase the size of any of them. And like StangLou said, you're inviting an intrusion of dirt and water by cutting into the baffling/shielding.

i thought about getting of the ram air funnels that people used to mount under the 5.0's........then cut a hole to mount it up in there. hehe

but i think they may be right.
after i mounted my C&L truflow inlet tube, 75mm accufab & C&L plenum ( and before my densecharger broke right @ maf) i had to take a 1 1/2 hr round trip to wifes work & back home.
when i got home my kids wanted to see the new parts installed. i popped the hood & showed them.......then i decided to feel how cool the were.........inlet tube was colder than if i had left it in freezer all night.....same on 75mm T.B.
the plenum was not freezing but it was not warm either.
granted the temp was about 30 degrees out, but i was amazed.

i hope you dont plan on doing this..

Well if this piece wasn't even present on the 99-2002s, I don't see any problem with *slightly* widening the opening. Besides, when the silencer is removed mud won't be sucked up cause you don't have a "straw" anymore :)

i just dont see any benefits, just the more of a possibility of something going wrong, prove me wrong though :D

Of course you could also say they put it on the '03s because prior years had problems.

Touche. Oh well, lol. Just glad I checked here before hacking a huge amount off. The little bit I did is enough for me since I read this.
