Woooo Hoooo! I've been waiting for AFR to bring this head to market for nearly two years and I think the wait was worth it. I was starting to think the day would never come when they would be available but that day is here!!! These are AFR's brand new AFR 185 Comp heads. They feature AFR's new lightweight valve train. I had mine upgraded with their better valve springs and titanium retainers. These heads feature a different CNC port than the non-comp 185's, and they have the AFR205 exhaust port. I took some pics with these heads next to my AFR185 pedestal mount heads that I have for sale. Here's a few:

I also had these heads flowed so that I'd know exactly what they produced. Look at the low lift numbers and try not to drool on your keyboard!

Lift .....In........out............I/E ratio

.200....154.....126.............82%
.300....210.....173.............82%
.400....253.....205.............81%
.500....281.....224.............80%
.550....291
.600....290.....230.............79%

To say I'm happy is an understatement! I never thought that they'd get flow numbers like this with a 185cc head, especially the 154cfm at .200" lift, that is absolutely nuts! I debated for a long time if I should go 205 or stick with a 185cc head and now that the flow numbers are in I know I absolutely made the right choice. These are going to be a killer set of street heads.

I'm also doing a fox TB conversion, here's a progress pic:

I should have dyno numbers within the next three weeks showing what the head and TB swap was worth. I'm still planning to run this combo NA until next year when the T76 goes on.

Those flow numbers look great at the low lift...that thing is gonna be a monster. Did you go with the low compression pistons because of the 58cc head? Or were you trying to bump up compression...

AFR put up 5 sets of these on ebay for $999.00 a pair, I can't believe there letting such a badazz head go so cheap!

Heads look great Paul! I can't wait to see some dyno #'s on them.
Did you find a install article on the shaft-mount rockers yet?

I have a PTK single T76 turbo setup sitting here for the car so that is the reason for the low compression. I set the bottom end up to run a 58cc head as back when I built the shortblock the 58cc chambers on the AFR's were a better design than the 62cc one. With this 58cc head and the fel pro MLS gaskets I'm running the compression will be exactly 9.0:1 which was my target as this is a heavy street car and I felt than 9:1 would be a perfect compromise for maintaining low end and off boost response and keeping the overall compression low enough for the boosted application.

Rob- LOL, for as long as I have waited on these heads, I better not see another set on ebay or elsewhere for a while!
I searched for the article and found it once but I forgot to save the link so I'll have to look for it again.
Its not on their site, I had to find it via a google search.

Chris- I'm hoping to try and get as close to 400rwhp as I can before I put the turbo kit on. I was at 355rwhp with the 165's and 65mm Sn95 TB setup, so I hope with these changes and a little luck that I'll pick up somewhere around 20-30rwhp. I'll still be short of my goal, but I'll be closer.

Thanks everyone else.

Those are some sweet numbers for the 185 head.

I kinda compared the numbers to the TW heads I had ported this winter. It was a pretty penny to get it done, and the exhaust numbers from my heads are even below what are on those heads.
I'll be very interested to see how they perform. Keep us posted.

I get a lot of Red Xs instead of pictures?

Lift numbers look good. Are you gonna continue to abuse those ol' 24s after the head and throttle body swap?

I will SWAG 380rwhp @ 6500, 380rwtrq @ 4750.

Thanks guys!

Rob S.- LOL! I knew you were busting my balls as I knew you were aware of how long I've waited for these. I worked on my fox TB setup a little this weekend. I didn't have time to really work on the car at all as I was too busy with other stuff. I want to dyno the car with the fox TB on it with the 165's before I swap my new 185's on. I hope to dyno it later this week and do the head swap over the weekend and get it dyno'd next week if at all possible.

Rob C.- call me as I should be around. I will be working on the car tonight as my daughter is at my in-laws so I have all night to get a lot of stuff done. I may have to go to my dad's house to have my IAC sensor bung welded into my new intake pipe though. I want to talk to you about your vortech too.

Wi Stang- I'll post the results as soon as I have them. I can wait to see how they perform. With the substantial increase in flow across the board, I really hope to see some sizable gains.

Adam- The pictures are working fine for me, I host all of my pics through mustangmods and I've never had an issue with them. For the time being, I am going to use the 24lb injectors. The only reason for this is I want to get as close to back to back dyno numbers as I can and I have limited time to get everything done and to the dyno. After I get the 185's on I'm going to swap injectors and re-do my entire fuel map so that its ready to go when I put the turbo on. When you setup the fuel maps in the AEM you choose the high and low points of the map. Right now my map is setup all NA so that my low point is like -20psi of vacuum and the highest point is 0.5psi of pressure. When I put the injectors in my low point will remain the same but the high point may be around 20psi or so with the mid point being 0psi. I will be in the -20psi to 0 psi range until I put the turbo on, but once I do I'll already have those cells semi-setup instead of having to redo then entire thing over again. I was going to put in 60's but I really don't know if they'll be enough or not now.

Are these going to be widely available now? I wonder how they might work with an N/A high-compression 347 or were they meant for forced induction?

They just became available John, I believe I got one of the very first sets available. IMO, this is THE head I'd run on such a combo. I know its awfully early for me to sound so strong about my opinion, but I know what went into these heads and if they perform anywhere near how I think they will it'd be my head of choice. Ultimately, it does all come down to the entire combo and the intended usage. My car is still primarily a street car and this is the head for such a combo. If its going to be a track only car it may not be any better than a 205, but then again it may. Call Jason at AFR and tell him your intended usage and he could answer this question better than I could.

So if you're anything like me when it comes to tinkering with the software, how far along are you on the turbo tune by now and how many times has your wife threatened divorce?

The red Xs went away when I got home, the firewall at my work must block only that site you link too.

The mid and low lift flow are the balls. But I'm still wondering about the shorter stroke you're using. I'd think with those numbers you'd want more piston speed to increase the velocity to use up all that flowing goodness. Knowing now what the kind of heads you're be bolting on compared to what you thought you would be running, would you still pick the 331? I think you may have touched on it before, I know you picked that stroke for a reason... can you explain the reasoning again for the slow kids in the classroom?
