my dad informed me that once we get his blown 85gt running perfect so i can dd it, its time to do the motor in my car. i will start off by saying the car will be a daily driver, and smog is not an issue. i have a 88 gt and my motor is slowly loosing power, burning oil, and there alot of codes popping up. right now i supposedly have a 30k mile shortblock, stock heads, gt40 upper/lower, 24lb's w/ granatelli, and full exhaust(motor built my previous owner, i have random reciepts and still trying to figure out why car is so fast- dynoed 290rwhp 327tq by previous owner). anyways, its time to build a new motor and i need some opinions. my goal is 400rwhp and still be streetable. 1. i could rebuild my motor with a 331 stroker kit, either gt40s or 351 heads, new valvetrain, etc and keep the efi, but i HATE working on efi, and with how messed up my car is right now id rather not go this route. 2. i could build a mexican 302 with 331 stroker, 351w heads, and go carbed. 3. a mild 351w build, carbed, with worked heads, nasty cam, etc. or 4. tear down my motor, figur out why its so fast, do rings, get some trickflow or afr heads, valvetrain etc... but i dont think ill get the power i want.

none of these will get you to 400rwhp...first off idk how your making the power you are with what you have...that being said, a great way to make over 400rwhp or close to it, is a really good 347 build in your existing block as long as its in good shape...you'll need to bump the compression up a bit, afr 185's, edelbrock performer rpm 2 or holley systemax, and a custom cam of some type...you can talk to ed curtis from fti, or jay allen for one of them bad boys...thats probably the best way to make the power your looking for, and have something reliable...

so nobody likes the mexican 331...hmmm. ok then. now id like to ask exactally why you guys would suggest a crate 5.0 from ford racing....yeah its a new motor, but why? i could build a much more powerful motor for so much less. i said a goal of 400rwhp, and how many people actually get theor goal? not many. im expecting around 350 and probably less considering budget and such. the main point of the thread was to see what you guys though of my choices with efi vs. my carbed choices. i am building the motor with my girlfriends dad from stuff he either has or can get. i guess theres not alot of help in here...

i dont see why the 351w would have ANY problems getting you to 400hp decent heads, intake, exhaust and you can have a streetable car with some good oompf to boot

Take one of these:

5.0L/302 – 345HP GT-40 ALUMINUM HEAD CRATE ENGINE - $3,650

Add one of these:

SuperchargerVortechV1CCW(70pr)1.JPG

Supercharger, Vortech V-2 SQ S-Trim, CCW, Straight Discharge -- $2,549.99

You'll make at LEAST your target 400 RW with very little boost.

A rebuild might get you there cheaper but you'll need to pay close attention to the entire combination or end up being another one of those guys that posts in tech, wondering why he's only making 280 RWHP. hehe

i vote for a crate 5.0 from ford racing

300 hp out of the crate

sorry is more like 345HP out of the crate

cost around $3,650

crate engine pros

comes with a Warranty. now where can you get a 365 hp engine with a Warranty :nice:

cost more but hey 0 miles

and it will last you for a long time if you take care of it.

all these horsepower ratings on crate motors are to the crank unless otherwise specified...these are all to the crank..

and rarely do those motor from Ford racing put down even 290+ at the tires. I would just talk to rick or a local builder. Build a stout 331/347 (your choice) and a custom cam with good heads will get you to that goal and still be driveable. a mild 351 will easily get you there, but then again why not just stroke that to 408 or 393??

Personally im shooting for 375rwhp and im building a somewhat budget 331. I have a track heat intake and the bottom end almost done, just need to decide what heads and cam will do the job.
