New thermostat new problems

well i replaced my thermostat today. it solved my overheating problem. but now the gauge won't rise more than one notch over 130* and my heater isn't nearly as hot as it used to be.

Did you get a cheapie or a quality part? Take the thermostat out, put it in a kettle of water and heat the water until it opens. Then measure the temp of the water. It should correspond with the rating stamped on it.

my '93 stang did the same thing, wouldent heat up at all..if i was lucky, it would soemtimes for some reason (think the fan). even if it was in cool days...

It might be a normal 2core radiator 4cyl thing.

interesting...a working thermostat makes heater not as warm. What temp thermostat did u put in?

i believe it may be stuck open. it's not rising above 130* nopr does the heater get warm so i need to pull it out and check it.

did you put it in backwards ?? It happens... and putting it in hot water wont make it open... I thought it was the pressure on one side that pushed it open.... Hmm... New to me, always learn something

when you put it in did you n=make sure that the hol;e were the waqter goes to the heater core is not blocked by the tstat i had that problem i fixed it now hot heaterand puting the tstat in boiling water will make it open

i put it in the way the old one was in there. i have a feeling it maybe stuck open. so i am going to pull it out and try again. if it was staying closed i would be overheating, but it won't rise above 130* nor does the heater get hot

My 90 the heat sucks and the temp gauge doesnt go over 130. I thought my gauge was just not reliable

heating problems

Well, here in Iowa it tends to get cold, and the heaters won't keep up. Our solution is to put a bit of carboard box in front of the radiator. Seems to help...At least when it's well below zero...

Also, a thought.. have you had your heater core checked lately?

It's amazing, auto parts are the only industry I can think of where you often buy completely defective parts. Cheap parts suck ass, call the dealership.

Yeah but I just bought a motorcraft and tested it on the stove in boiling water and found that it works. Kinda cool to watch but what would be way cooler is if someone made a PID based controlled butterfly valve specifically for cooling. Remove the stock thermostat, cut down the length of the upper hose put in the electric butterfly valve and walla! That way you could have it set at any temp you desire and changing that value would be easy.
