Hey, I'm new to this forum. I saw a white 88 GT conv. at a dealer. On this windshield it said that it was an automatic and had 6,000 miles. I didnt get a chance to stop and look at it yet. How much do you guys think this thing is worth?

What are some common problems that these cars have?

if its at a dealer and it really only has 6k on it its gonna be ALOT. I usally see foxes with low miles selling for 15 plus. It shouldent have many or any problems with that low of miles. Even the higher miles cars dont have many problems, or at least thats my expierence. Most common problem I see is the rear main seal leaking, its usually only a lil bit and not a big deal.

Great car for crusing... if you want to go fast without putting so much effort into fixing up the car, find a coupe with a 5 speed.

The 6000 mile thing - is it only 6000 miles, 106,000 miles or 206,000 miles. Look carefully at the carpet, brake pedal and accelorator pedal for signs of wear. Look at the passenger side carpet for discoloration - a sure sign of a leaky heater that is a common Mustang problem. Look under the hood and examine the electrical wiring on top of the engine. With only 6000 miles, the wiring will be soft and flexible with no tape peeling off and no hardened or cracked insulation. Look at the insulation blanket on the underside of the hood, it should be smooth & intact with no oil spots or tears. A truly low mileage engine will be clean as a pin. Look at the body for signs of misalignment. Pull the dipstick for the auto trans out and look & smell the fluid: it should not look black or smell burnt. Get the VIN number & have a CARFAX run on it.

I'm going to try to go and take a look at the car, if not tomorrow then sometime this weekend.
So the common problems of 5.0 mustangs are leaky rear main seals and leaky heaters?

Those and plenty more

I'd be pretty skeptical about the whole 6000 miles thing though. If thats true theyll want a pretty penny for it, but I'd say it's more likely to be 106000 miles. If this is the case it's worth somewhere between $3k-$6k depending on how perfect of condition its in. With 6000 miles on it they might be asking closer to 10 or 12k. I'd go through it with a fine tooth comb if they say its got 6000. Itd have to be in storage for a LONG time.

Yeah I'm more worried about the super low 6,000 miles on the car than one with 60,000. Seals and such can go wrong with a car that has set for years. But maybe it was one of those cars that was started every weekend in a heated storage place. Who knows...

Verts are a love afair, especially fox verts. they leak water, they leak air. A conversation with a passenger right next to you often has to be shouted on the freeway.

the tops tear and rip maybe every 5-8 years, and cost $700-$1500 for a new one. The body flexes and creakes like nothing else. They weigh about 400 or so pounds more than their hatch/notch counterparts.

an aod vert is going to be especially slow, don't buy it for performance reasons.

I have a vert, and yes I love it. Warm summer nights make it all worth it. Wet cold winters will make you want to get rid of it, that's why i said it's a love affair, if you are not hardcore into verts, get a hatch/notch mustang, or an earlier ttop, but those have problems too (leaks/body flex)

thanks!!! I hate to sound like I'm talking trash on verts, because I love mine to death. If I wasn't so hard core into it though, I would have gotten fusterated and dumped it within the first year of ownership. When I'm in my brothers notch, I can actually hear the radio, and have a conversation!

Of course, the best feeling in the world, just shy of sex or beer is a warm summer night with the moon out, a clear cloudless night, cruising down pacific coast highway with the flowmasters gently burbling from behind you. Man, I'm salivating right now. (verts been down for second summer in a row..I always seem to get it running by winter and down again by summer...go figure)

if someone really cares (as you do), they can be made to run with the big boys too. TMoss' ride is not too shabby, for one!

I've never chatted with Tmoss, but I've heard a lot about him everywhere I go. Didn't know he had a vert.

what I didn't mention, is that I couldn't agree more. The weight handicap can be overcome by a proper build and a good driver. My buddy had (before someone totaled it) an 89 vert (which he just finished transplating all guts into an 89 4 banger...I helped, ooh what a project that was) anyhow, with a stock 240k longblock, and original intake/heads, everything. With cai, 3.55 gears, good rear control arms, airbag in the spring for wheel hop, drag radials, and that's about it managed consistent 13.7's without the help of any real power adders such as heads/intakes, etc etc.

What I like about my vert, is no one looks at it like a mean muscle car (it's a bummer sometimes) so I'm building my car slowly, but it's gonna be mean as hell. I practically dream about having my vert with a full cage driving around the streets. christ, I've been driving my tacoma too long. (stang went down for 3.73 gears, new control arms upper/lower out back, alum driveshaft and the cowl hood, and a working t5. Down for a few months because of that (no time) then I drove it maybe 3 times and ripped it all apart 6 months ago for a complete black interior transplant. Hope to be finished this weekend..maybe)

sorry to steal the thread

Verts are quieter with the top down, or at least on my car. I like it, and I don't have to scream to my passenger on the highway. maybe when I get those 3.73s though lol
