New to the forum and no Mustang yet, but I am looking at buying an 69 Mach I Cobra Jet with factory drag package. The owner tells me this is an extremely rare model and is asking north of $50k for the car. Is there some way to tell from the vin# 9T02R187917 how this car came from the factory? Any help is greatly appreciated.

when purchasing a car in that range, I would buy a Marti report and verify its true build...

Agreed.

And for $50k the car had better be immaculate.

Punch classic Mustang vin decoder into google and you should get something helpful. Also, I would take a look and find out what should be there, which numbers should match and go to work on the car to make sure its all there. Also, check for the usual stuff like rust and what not. Good luck.

If it is a drag pak it is very rare indeed. The R tells you that it is a 428 CJ with ram air. To be able to tell if it is a drag pak you would look for an oil cooler in front of the radiator on the drivers side and the two horns mounted on the left side in front of the radiator. The door tag should have an axle code W(4.30 to 1) or a 3.91 to 1 rear that I don't remember the axle code. Caution, door tags can be changed very easily. The rear axle center section should be a nodular but this can be changed out very easily too.

I too would call Kevin Marti and get a report on the car and check it out with a fine tooth comb. That's a lot of money but that would be a lot of car also.
