few questions:

Are bent door bars like this allowed?:

What about swing outs...

Im considering buying this cheap 4 point and putting in the rear bars my self...

The guy said it was bolted in and he just unbolted it... he did say the front plates are welded in to the car... figured welding in some new plates for my car wouldnt be a problem... i want it fully welded in anyway...

For $75 is it worth picking it up??? ive never saw a 4 point cage that is the door bars and the main hoop... he said it was pulled from a 01 saleen he bought that was built for some race on the salt flats... the car was stolen and he bought it salvage. he doesent know the make of the cage.

i was going to order a cage from auto weld chassis but i wasnt sure about the legality on the side bars.:shakehead

What is it made out of and who made it? how thick is it? is it for looks or full race? if you gonna get it just get a good nicely built one,

Your car isn't cheap you know so why use cheap cage? Adam, if i were you i skip this one.

Just me...

Those would not be NHRA legal. The door bars must be between shoulder and the elbow in height.

Those door bars will not pass tech. Mine are at the absolute lowest they can be and still pass tech. IMO when you own a 'vert you have to really go the extra mile and put in the safest and best bar you can afford as its not only an integral part of the car from a chassis standpoint, but from a focal/visual one as well.

I had mine done by Henry at: index

Be prepared to spend some serious coin for a bar like this though.

About how much did you drop on your cage if you dont mind me asking. I understand where you are coming from. I like the MM kit but im not happy with the rear bars... i want something that comes down from the main hoop in the back like yours. Anychance you think they will just replicate your bar for me and i could weld it in. iirc yours is moly id settle for mild steel.

My car is a cheap POS. it would look good when i welded it all in but since the door bars are not legal its not worth my time. i figured they were not anyway. i hit the track alot so it needs to get through tech.

What i want is a 6pt with swingout door bars that can be removed for when i drive it on the street.... and i want the back bars to come from the top of the main hoop like yours are paul.
http://autoweldchassis.com/opts.ivnu

Has the options i want... and chris has become a hell of a welder and can lay down a nice bead of mig. so installation wouldnt be a problem. I dont have my rule book down here at at school. whats the rules for swingouts. i might call up this place this week and see how much it will set me back

adam the MM bars are not legal and most other bolt or weld ins are not legal either. Pretty much limited to having someone build it for you. I have looked into this a few times already.

Depends on the track. You just have to find a track that isn't too particular.

To my under standing the MM bars that have a fixed harness mount and are 6 point. Are legal if mig welded in place with a solid bead... no grinding the welds allowed.

From what I can remember, I'm almost 100% sure that for a weld-in cage to be legal it has to be TIG welded in. Do some research on it, I would hate to see you go through this all an not have an NHRA legal cage. The techs at Island Dragway are anal as hell and have failed both my father and myself for the stupidest things.

and

"All 4130 chromoly tube welding must be done by approved TIG heliarc process; mild steel welding must be done by approved MIG wire feed or approved TIG heliarc process. Welding must be free of slag and porosity. Any grinding of welds prohibited. See illustration. Roll bar must be padded anywhere drivers helmet may contact it while in driving position. Adequate padding must have minimum 1/4-inch compression or meet S.F.I. Spec 45.1. All cars running 180-mph or faster, S.F.I. Spec 45.1 mandatory. "

Not sure if thats legit though

Adam your info above is correct. I don't remember exactly what mine cost but IIRC it was around $2500, but I had >$300 just in my chris alston chassis works swing-out clevises. The MM bar is legal, and its even legal if it is bolted in using sandwiched 6X6 plates that are on top and under the floor pan.

Thanks paul. the 6/6's m\ust be 1/8'' thick iirc... does that sound right to you? EDIT: never mind it was in the pic i posted.

Ill probably just order one from autoweldchassis.com in Scranton and drive up and pick it up. I have family in wilkesbare so its not to far.

thanks again for your help. paul any chance you have your rule book handy? what are the legal swing our door bar hinges?

I just dont trust a bolt in for some reason...

I'll try to find it Adam. I moved in December and I still haven't found a lot of my stuff. LOL! The car above was the driver FX car and it only had a 4pt autopower bar. I had seriously concidered the autoweld chassis bar for my car, but after seeing the work that Henry had done I knew I had to have him do it.

It says that all chromoly steel must be TIG welded. Most aftermarket roll bars are mild steel, not chromoly. The picture of that blue car above, you can see where the roll bar punched through the floor. It doesn't matter how strong the roll bar is if there is no added support under on the floor pans. So don't go too crazy. It's not going to matter what you have for a roll bar. If it's not a full cage, chances are it's just going to punch right the floor if you roll the car over.

Alrighty then I stand corrected. I guess I was thinking about chromoly because my dad has a chromoly cage in his Chevelle and it was required to be Tig'ed. Guess that makes sense now. Good luck with the build man

It really doesn't matter much. I can't think of a track tech that's going to pull up your carpet to see what kind of welds you have. Track people are lazy, that's why they take the whole winter season off.

Hi all. I too am looking into a roll bar. Killer, is yours a four point or six point? It looked like it is a four point. If so, I thought it had to be a six point. Nice car. Thing runs well.
