Nick's "lvndpst" Restoration (and Slight Modification) Thread

Got to spend a little time sanding tonight. Have I ever mentioned how much I dislike body work? I managed to get the bumper sanded to the point that its ready for primer. Since I was covered in dust and ready for a shower, I decided to stick it out in the rain to wash its dust off. I would post a picture, but it keeps doing it sideways again. Hopefully tomorrow evening I can scrub it down properly, and maybe even shoot some adhesion promoter and primer.

Aw hell, why not give you a sideways pic of a sanded bumper in the rain.

It's not sideways,..It's upside down, and it's dark.

Well, the lower section of the bumper is in its first coat of primer. @Davedacarpainter , I used two coats of adhesion promoter first. I found a few imperfections in my sanding of the PBA, so I need to fill and sand a little more. Then another coat, then sand, then another coat, then sand. Body work, I tell ya. Anyway. Few pics of the progress, and it shows how not exact the bumpers fit together. Notice the outside corners. The gap is filled with very thick PBA with screws through it from the back side. When its fitted on the car, you dont notice the different shapes much.

Notice I kept my trim standing tall over the face of the Cobra lower. That was important to me to prevent it from being one big flat face.

Couple more of the corners.

I think it looks hot as sht Nick, very good job. :nice:

What do you want for those corners? Mixing different generations will cause that. If you wanted to go nuts you could have split the corner of the new bumper about three times on each side and stretched it out to the fox contours and filled in the gaps with a couple tubes of PBA with some fiberglass mesh.

You made it the same on both sides, symmetry is vital in making something you think stands out look like it was planned. People will even comment on how much they like that feature, I bet.

Truthfully, the bumper "overhang" looks right for a fox. It's going to look great when it's all finished up.

Thanks Dave. I considered doing a couple different things with the corners, but I feel that the protruding fog lights actually complete the look, and leaving it as is looks A-OK. The fog surrounds stick out just about perfectly flush with the front face of the fox trim. All in all, I am really excited with how it is coming along.

I think it'll look like it was supposed to be that way too,....especially when it's painted (painting will "tone down" obvious details)
I also would like to give you the official 3 pats on the head for your decision to keep the parting line defined between the fox and Cobra bumper. I agree that w/o it it would be one big assed smooth face.

That bumper is coming along great....I'm taking baby steps on mine. The temps are still fluctuating a lot here.

My corners came a little lower than the bottom strip line by about 3/8 inch. It should fill well....I hope.

If we keep doing this mod someone will market a full nose and take all the joy away from us o_O

That actually came out damn good. I'm impressed. Are you installing the fog lamps as well?

Yes, I will be using new OEM fog bezels and fog lights once its done. Undecided on the lower lip. I made it so the bottom of the bumper is even with the bottom of the side body kit. If I add the black lower lip, not only will it not blend with anything else on the car, but it will hang lower than the sides of the car. I think I am going to trim off the mounts for it, and not use it.

No different than guys adding Mach 1 lips on 4eye and LX bumpers. Seems to work out ok. Possible to give it a shot?

While using my @madmike1157 work bench, I managed to vibrate it into my freshly primered bumper. So, I went a little backwards on that front. No biggie, just more PBA smearing just like I had already done in a few spots tonight.

At least you are still in the fill prime fill prime faze. That corner looks like it was designed that way. Can't wait to see it painted and on the car.

Balancing baby life with two active little boys and a healing wife is a tough chore for one guy! But alas, I made a little progress tonight. I sanded and put another coat of primer on the bumper, as well as the first coat on my '83 hood scoop. Hopefully tomorrow I can get time to give them a good sanding and another coat of primer.

Here is your now regular sideways uploading pic for this evening.

I came home tonight and promptly stripped the tint off the front windows of the Charger after being pulled over this morning. Then after that task was finished, I got to sanding and spraying a second coat of primer on the '83 hood scoop. It looks good, so it is now ready for color. Problem is, I still need to order that paint.

After everyone was fed and cleaned up for the night, I got back out in the garage and sanded and sprayed a third and final coat of high build primer on the bumper. It still has a few imperfections, but as I was looking at it something hit me like a ton of bricks. I just got done telling another member here that I drive the piss out of my cars, and I do not like worrying about chips/scratches. So I've decided the bumper is good enough, and also ready for color. One day @Davedacarpainter will get the pleasure of fixing my car correctly and making it look fantastic, but for now, meh.

In other news, my tubular intake, lower GT40 intake, and throttle body spacer are still at the powder coater. What initially was supposed to take 3 to 5 days, is going on 2 weeks, 2 days. I called to check in, and was told all would be done by the time I got off work and came over. When I arrived, only the upper intake and spacer were done, and both were fish eyed and shtty looking. I quickly turned and said, "You've got to be shtting me?" The person working said, you will need to take up your concerns with Ashley, she is the one you dealing with your parts. Tomorrow Ashley and I are going to have a talk about how she has said they would be ready 4 different dates now, and how what is ready is completely unacceptable workmanship. If they refuse to redo everything, then I will be stuck paying someone else to strip their shtty powder coating off before it can be done correctly. That in turn, will have me setting fire to the building of the first person's business. :flame:

Good work is really hard to find these days. This shop came at a recommendation of a co-worker. I have since told him I would hate to see the girls he dates.

What is it with you and vendors?

You buy a transmission that's WRONG, pay the "expert" to rebuild it,..then he want's to charge you to transfer the stuff over to the new case that he shoulda caught in the first place?...
Now you find Ashley's fly by night powder coating and make up, and when they screw the finish up,..you gotta tell them that the finish is screwed up?

Iowa,.....:nonono:

Do you have a letter stamped onto your forehead when you walk into these shops, or do you just pay them in advance, and just turn around, bend over, and assume the position? :leghump:
