Why did you not clean that dirty ass engine bay while the engine was out? Some simple green works wonders.

Semi junkyards...they're not aluminum either. They're just plain chrome plated steel. Not something you want.

Short answer? I am so ready to just drive the damn thing. Engine bay cleaning is something that can wait until after the car is drivable. I already wasted too much time hiding wires (notice the wire-free strut towers).

Long answer is, that hazy black stuff you're seeing isn't dusty paint. That's 20 year old Ziebart spray-on rust inhibitor. It's not much more than a thin coating of dry tar. One of these days I'm going to embark on a mission to strip all that stuff out of there, fill all the excess holes, and paint it gloss black. That day isn't today though, haha.

It lives!

I don't know how, but it does. Buttoned up enough stuff this morning to start it and let it idle a bit. It struggled at first, but after a couple of seconds it settled into a 750-800 RPM steady idle. I blipped the throttle a couple times, and when it comes back down to idle it aaaaaaaaaalmost dies, so either I'm going to have to figure that out, or the computer will adapt and correct it. We'll see.

I still have some finishing touches to do, which includes burping the cooling system and tucking up some wires, but I imagine the car will see it maiden voyage tomorrow (I'll be at work the rest of today).

Here is the first run vid, sorry for the cheezy commentary!

Thanks guys, I'm pretty happy that it started up and had a good idle on the first try... Just means that I at least have everything put together right.

Stuff I hope to accomplish today:

-Tie down loose wiring
-Put fender skirts back in
-Top off/burp coolant system
-Set timing
-Reinstall a few trim pieces and dust off the car.

After that, it SHOULD be drivable... And believe me, I plan on driving the **** out of it. Expect to see some more pics and vids in the near future.

looks good, just wondering about your oil fill cap. What did you end up doing? I'd be worried about those nuts coming loose inside.

Why not just plug the PCV, cut the top off the valve cover and use a breather with a hose clamp

Well, I've had the opportunity to drive it a couple times, and I'm pretty happy. It idles a little lower than I'd like, which is causing a pretty ridiculous lope even though the cam is pretty mild, so I have to get that figured out. It also will sometimes die when I take my foot off the gas and the car is not in gear, but I suspect that has something to do with the low idle.

Other than that, it runs great. I can lug the engine down into the 1500-2000 RPM range with no bucking or any issues. Then, from my butt-o-meter so far, the car feels like a regular bolt on 5.0 with smooth acceleration from 2000-4000 RPM, but once you pass 4K, the engine starts to get angry. Once you hit 5000, your eyeballs are starting to sink into your skull, haha. I've been too afraid to take the engine past 5500 so far, but it gets there in a HURRY. I need to get some video of it for you guys.

I like it a lot, too. I still mostly use my stock tach when I'm driving around town, but the digital unit is great for the track. It's obviously way more accurate and it had a programmable shift light and RPM memory.

I DROWNED the nuts with red loc-tite, because I was worried about that, too. I intend to swap out the bottom two with nylock nuts, too. I don't know why I didn't do that in the first place...

Yea, I've played with a few different ideas. That tube is gonna have to go when I move to a 90mm TB, anyway. I guess I'd just like to retain the PCV system if at all possible, it's just probably going to need more modifications.

I think I'm going to get a Moates Quarterhorse at some point and tune the car myself. It will need a tune at some point, if for no other reason than to just raise the stock rev liiter, though I'm suspect that the car will need some tuning to get the best performance out of it, too. I yanked a plug after running it the first couple of times and it looked like the engine was running rich. I hope that the computer will slowly correct that will it's adaptive strategy, but I'm not banking on it.

Yep. A9L with 30lb injectors and an Abaco MAF meter calibrated accordingly. Like I said above, it will probably benefit from a tune, but the car is running pretty damn good as-is.

I wouldn't risk the filler cap idea, correct me if I'm wrong but loctite works when it is not heated, and you are in essence putting it into an oven....if they come loose you're gonna lose your engine

Hey Nik there are some good tech articles on how to properly set the Base idle and tps for optimal idle etc.
