I am looking for a good all-around gear for both track and street use. I now hav 3.55's and they are not enough. I am trying to decide between 3.73's and 4.10's. I prefer the 4.10 but I am told that I will have no traction on the spray in the 1st three gears. I totally believe this on street tires but I only run N/A on the street. I run DR's at the track. What is the experience of others here at a well-prepped track?

Both of my cars have 4.10s and i have had no problems with traction at the track, and that is with 150 shot and M/T ET streets.
One of my cars is a 1998 gt 5 spd that ran 8.1 with 1.6 60 ft time in the 8th mile
and my 1995 gt auto with a 3000 stall that ran 8.3 with a 1.8 60 ft time in the 8th mile

I'd go with 4.10's unless you plan on driving 15,000 miles a year...

I personally have 3.73's because I drive my car all the time except rain and winter...

Seems like the only way for me to hook up at the track with 4.10's and 100shot would be to run slicks. Those who have no traction problems are running ET streets.

Squeeze & Stroke - what tires do you use at the track?

On Fire - why is the 15k miles/yr a factor? Is the 4.10 too much shifting? The highway RPM isn't an issue with my tranny, I have a .59 5th which puts 4.10's @ 70mph in the 2200 rpm range.

3.90's would be perfect but my installer won't do anything other than FMS. Maybe I can convince him to do like a Pro 5.0 set or something.

You should do 3.73s or 3.55s if you've got a 5speed. For an automatic, 4.10s are the only way to go.

A 4.10 is certainly not "too much" gear for a street car. And, if you're using ET Streets and not hooking up off the line, even when spraying with nitrous, there is something else wrong in the chassis.

Spraying the car off the line with a 4.10 and a sticky tire is putting your entire rear end on borrowed time.

I think that 4.10s would be good for the Eighth mile if you are running that. I would go with 3.73s if you plan on being around or at 400hp.

I think 4.10s are way to much for a street car especially if its got nitrous. 3.73 are definately the way to go. I've blown the tires away in 2nd gear with the 100 shot with 3.73s so you can imagine what your gonna do with 4.10's.

Well, you need to think about this a little more. My car has 4.10's and I top off 4th gear (redline) at the track. I wouldn't mind getting nitrous, but I would either have to get a taller tire or shift into 5th, which would be stupid. Also, I have traction problems at the track with 315 nitto dr's, I couldn't imagine having another 100-150 horse.

With my set-up I love 4.10's, but for you, I would go with 3.73 or 3.90. Get the most you can get as long as you don't leave 4th gear.

Are you saying that you are hitting the rev limiter at 105mph in fourth? The calculators say that 4.10' can get up to 111mph at 6000 rpm. I currently trap at 107.9. I have been weighing my options with this in mind. It is exactly my goal to get the most out of my gears and on paper 4.10's look like they are barely enough to get me through the traps. What I don't know is if gears would increase my MPH (I don't think they will)

Yes, when I'm at the track I am just about redlined. I take it right to redline and shut it down everytime, just for simplicity. In actuality, I may have 100-200 rpms left. I have gotten a 106 mph and not that this changes things much (if at all), but I currently have NO tread on my nittos, so the OD of the tires is slightly less than stock. If the tread is 8/32 in. new and I have less than no tread, that is about 20/32 of an inch less than new. That is getting pretty technical though.

Even with the most worn out tire, treadwear wouldn't account for the difference of 111mph vs. 106. If you are that close to the limiter at 106, then I'll hit the limiter a good distance from the line. Wow, thanks for the good info. If I didn't spray the car or never went to the track, I would go 4.10 all the way but I'll run out of RPM on a 26" tire at the track. Now I'm thinking Motive 3.90's.

id vote for 3.90's most guys run out of gear with 4.10s and end up hitting 5th like said before, which is useless. motive gear is solid, strange engineering has em for like 159 i think. solid gear, ive got motives in mine and love em.

Might have to get a Dart block but don't want to and if I do, then 363 instead of 331. Thoughts on what I've already bought so far.......
