I'm planning on getting 245/40/R18 Z Nittos for my Mustang, my friend says that they're good tires but don't last very long on tread, but the salesman told me that they last very long and perform very well. Any experiences you guys have on this?

they have a 300 thread count.

my nitto 555s have 10K on them and still look new. ( rarely do any burnouts )

there very sticky in the rain and have good sidewall strength.

haha...sticky in the rain...haha least not the 555R's.

they didnt get very good traction in the rain...espically here in Fl in the summer it rains nearly every day but i tried not to drive the stang in the rain
yeah dude your wrong there.

i had 315/35/17's... good tires got about 15-20k out of them no track runs just some light to light stuff.

they can cut some good 60's though but not as good as the BFG's...do a search

alot of people dont realize the the 555 and 555R are different tires.
555=street tire
555R=drag radial.
Nitto also makes another 555 just for road racing/autocross. i think its called the 555RR or something.

i have heard nothing but good things about the 555, handle great and have good wet traction.

:stupid:

A LOT of people dont know this info.

good post :nice: More FYI: DO NOT PUT 555Rs ON THE FRONT WHEELS. ONLY ON THE REAR WHEELS. if you want drag radials, NT555s up front and NT555Rs in the rear.

The DR and semi slick tyres will not work as well in the wet for two reasons. Firstly the compound they use, they are softer and prefer higher operating temps (hence they don't disintigrate as normal tyres do when doing a burnout), they should grip ok on a wet surface but it it is wet and cold they will not perform anywhere near as good. Secondly is the tread pattern, it is not very deep and is minimal so you get a larger surface contact to the road, if there is standing water (even 1-2mm is enough) the tyres will not be able to move the water out of the way so aqua-plaining may occur.

The plus side is they will grip so much better in the dry, on a circuit they can be worth 2-3 seconds a lap over a regualr performance tyre.

The question is not are these good but what do you want? If you are into drag racing then set of DR's (any) will be worth it, but get a complmentry tyre for the front else the handling will go to shot. If you want to road race then the semi-slick is a good choice or if not bothered then the general performance tyre is good. But do remeber the better the performance the more it will wear - period.

Personally I run Michelin Pilot Sport cup tyres, these use a racing compound rubber (as used in the Porsche Cup Challenge) and are semi-slicks, similar to the Nitto NT-555R11 Extremes these make a great road track tyre and offer some of the properties of a DR.

If it was me I would fir the Nitto NT-555R Drag radial to the rear (http://www.nittotire.com/tires_555r.asp ) with the Nitto NT-555R11 Extremes (http://www.nittotire.com/tires_555r2.asp ) on the front, this would make a great combo, you just need to be awhere and drive sensibly in the wet though! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Else as an good every day performance tyre fit the Nitto NT-555 all round (http://www.nittotire.com/tires_555.asp ), it won't be the best but it will be a good alround performer wet/dry, road/strip.
