Welcome to stangnet!

what does the noise sound like to you though? it could just be bearings, they make a moaning sound like a wahhh wahh wahhh wahhh wahh...gear noise is typically a speed variable whine....

gears can be had for cheap if you look hard enough, they are normally about $170-$185 a set new, depending on where you look. Installing them-unless you've got an angel sitting on your shoulder, a pinion depth checker, and a dial indicator gear install is a very precise process...better off taking it to a shop.

they should be less than $150 to install though

welcome I would just get some new gears if its a 5 speed 3:73's if its a auto 4:10's. You'll love the car after gears feels way different. Also have them re do the trac lok while they are in there. Hope you like your stang and stangnet.

don't forget the friction modifier!

Also put in the extra clutches so it makes it even better and stronger. If you do a search on here you'll find out what I am talking about in a bunch of other threads.

Have you considered it might not be the rearend at all, and might be a problem with the drum brakes?

I had a awful metal on metal grinding noise awhile back that turned out to be the adjusting lever having broken off and was rubbing against the drum...

Just an idea...
