Noisy Gear Box - Why?

I have had my 92 GT for about a year, and since day one the gear box has been a bit noisy for my taste. The car has 165k miles on it.

At low RPM, the gear box sounds like a electric motor or a wind-up toy. There are vibrations that center in the box, and I don't know why.

I recently replaced the stock shifter with a Pro 5.0, at which time a replaced the fluid thinking that would help. But it did not help.

Are there any suggestions that may help me understand, or correct the issue?

Thanks in advance.

SOUNDS LIKE A BAD BEARING TO ME.. i COULD BE WRONG, BUT ITS WORTH STOPPING BY A TRANNY SHOP AND ASKING A PRO... bEEN THERE DONE THAT, MY FIRST TRANNY WINED SO LOUD PEOPLE THOUGHT I HAD A Y-TRIM.. THEN IT BLEW UP....

What do you know about the transmission? Is it an aftermarket piece or stock? Kevlar synchros are noisy and come in many of the aftermarket or super duty units. Is there a gasket installed between the shifter and the tranny? With no gasket, the vibration transfer to the shifter will make for more noise than what is normal.

Based on the previous owners's record keeping, this tranny is stock. However, there was no gasket on the shifter. Thanks for the response!

Are you sure it's not the fuel pump? A fuel pump describes the sound you are talking about and since the pump is in the tank, it's near the gear box. Just a thought as I thought the same thing when I put mine in for the first time. Good luck!
