Im back looking for some of my old buds from back in the day. For those that remember me I am now happily married and the stangs(I have 2 89 verts now) are sitting in front of my parents house waiting for an engine swap between the 2(the one is complete as far as chassis(minus brakes), and the new one has a nice ass trick flow motor in it). Really waiting for the money for a brake upgrade before throwing the tf motor in it.

Now for my problem. My wife accidentally filled up her 88 pontiac 6000 with e85. I have been away from the industry now since 2002, and I never learned anything about the ethenol 85. I did some research and came to the conclusion the car would be ok running one tank through, maybe even clean everything :D. Well, the next day it wouldnt hardly start, and it would die shortly there after. Now I have it where it starts fine(I did not a thing), but as soon as you give it any pedal it tries to die. If I leave the pedal down(not full) it is a 50/50 chance that it will sputter and die, or sputter and then slowly come back to life and climb in rpm. My thoughts on this are":

1. The ethanol is mostly oxygen, the o2 sensors are reading lots of oxygen and dumping as much fuel as possible, therefore flooding the cylinders.

2. The injectors are not capable of spraying enough fuel and the motor is dying due to the lack of fuel.

3. The engine never gets up to operating temperature due to the lower burn temp of the e85.

So... I tried to syphon the gass out of the tank(unfortunetally I dont have a flex fuel vehicle to burn it in but that is a whole other problem all together). But... there is something in the filler neck to stop a thief from stealing my gass with a hose... so now I have no clue what to do. How long would it take the car to burn through 16 gallons at idle? I can't really drop the tank because I am in a condo complex... what would you guys do...
Then there is always the possibility the car is falling on its face because of a totally unrelated circumstance. I am really looking for some input from someone who may have witnessed the accidental refueling with e85. Any suggestions? Thanks alot, and sorry for posting here but I honestly can not think of any where else to turn.

p.s. Please none of the throw the pos away comments, this car has truly been a blessing to us and trouble free up to this point.

Hey bud, long time!

If you wanted, you could disco' the fuel line somewhere easy (fuel filter, etc) and jump the self test connector (if applicable on that car. Or just hot wire the pump at the relay, etc) and actually pump most/all of the E85 out..........

As far as idling through the tank, I dont think it's too good for the cats on a non flex vehicle, but I know almost nothing about that new age fuel crap. :P

Good luck and bump.

If you cant work on it at your complex bring it to a shop. I cant see them charging more than a hour labor to drain the tank. You could dissconect the filler neck at the tank and drain it there, or have them do it.

That would be like putting octane booster in 100 octane fuel. :D

Due to the high ethanol content and the fact that ethanol's AFR is around 7.5:1, the engine is probably running lean. The gasoline in E85 raises the AFR a bit, but the ECU is still trying to maintain 14.7:1.

What is the "anti theft" device in the fuel neck? Not that little flapper?

Newer cars do often have Roll-over valves and anti-syphon valves. I also cant syphon fuel out of 'em worth a crap (when I need fuel for some little toy).

Thanks guys, WHATS UP HISSIN! Good to see your still around. The pump will only prime once without seeing a spark. Then it wont prime again until the oil pressure rises. I will have to see if I can jump the fuel pump relay. I will try to see if I can disconnect the line at the cfi. I unfortunetally am at my condo so getting under the car and disconnecting at the filter will be a major pita. Thanks for the advice, I am glad to know that you guys think like I that it is leaning out. Well 1 of my 3 thoughts chimed. I'll let you know what I find out :D

Oh and the anti-syphon is not the flapper, I am assuming there is a plate of some sort at the bottom of the filler neck, the hose just seems to hit a wall before it hits the gas. I tried for about 30 minutes to get the hose in last nite before making this post.

Edit: All hard lines at the new fandangled carb. Gonna have to jack her up and get to it at the fuel filter. I have a major headache, so gonna be a lil while before I can even attempt it. To bad there isnt a switch to get the baffle plate out of the way :)
