well im a 19 year old in VA who just bought a 65 fastback all original 289 "A" code. and well i have some ideas for the car i guess ill run by the never ending wisdom of the group here so here are some of my ideas. I guess im going for how someone might have hotrodded it in th 70s no efi or anything.. anyone out there around at that time give some ideas of mustang hotrods of this time and how they looked and what they did.

1. im gonna aim for 450 horses and settle around 400... p.s. already bored .030 over
2. t-5 5 speed and 4.11s in the rear... original 8 inch rear...
3. as original as i can get!! keppin the trumpets and factory rally pac came with it...

i know there might be some problems with the factory exhaust and extra power... so will the exhaust handel the power?? and obviously if anyone sees anything that wont work let me know... i will need help with the engine combo... i need to find a proven setup tht will work for me im only 19 so i dont have th $$ to trouble shoot much....
thanks

Brandon

you should run at least a 2.5" exhaust over the axle, its a tight fit to run it out the valance and some muffler shops wont do it because the clearance between the gas tank.

Welcome to the boards. I'm going to do a similar "period" build on my car too, only I'm after late-'60s Trans-Am.

Crunch and crunch. Even 400hp will be past the limits of a T-5, even a World Class. On top of that, the 8" rear wont handle it either. A few grippy hard launches and something will give.

In the '70s, aluminum heads were rare so that sticks you with irons if you want to be that "vintage". You might be able to scrounge up some old iron Trick Flow High Ports, though.

Air shocks and big ole L60X15 tires sticking out the quarters will give it that 70's look
Helps braking and handling too !
(How did we ever survive driving cars like that???)

Horsepower is great for sure - An honest 450hp (not just someones "estimate") out of a streetable 289 will be a challenge, especially normally asperated. Make sure the rest of the car (brakes, chassis, suspension, front end etc.) is up to handling the 400+ hp. your looking for - going from 0 to 110 quickly is a real thrill, stopping from 110 with factory brakes is a real thrill too - just a different kind!

Rear seat in my 65 fb just pulls out. But you might have to push in at the bottom of the front. There are two "hooks" that hold it down. Probably about a foot in from each end.

Nice price - can't wait to see pix.

Hahaha!!

If I get the seat out for you, will you rebuild my motor?

J/K

Pull up from the front but only after you've pushed in on the bottom of the front.

Push in, pull up.

I’m in VA. too....
I had to get rid of the trumpets when I had mine done... they restrict it to something like 1 3/4"

I had a shop do the work from header back with 2 1/2 and magnaflows 3" stainless steel tips. $600.00 Roberts custom exhaust in woodbridge. Looks great… a little low but I got the AOD and Shelby drop + 650 lowering springs.

I was planning on trying a set of stock springs.
