Noobie, Can't get laptop to recognize the tweecer

When I plug the tweecer into my laptop, I get a message stating that
the "USB Device Not Recognized"

When I pull up the USB device status it states "No drivers are
installed for this device"

I did try to install the device driver from the tweecer site, but the
installation does not complete. The msg reads "The wizard could not
find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently
have installed."

Yet, when I run the car with the tweecer installed and position 1 selected, the car runs very rough and incredibly rich. Does this suggest that the tweecer is functional?

Does the tweecer need to be plugged into the eec to install the
driver? I have tried it both ways, so that isn't the problem, just
curious.

I hope this made sense, I could sure use some help.

I've had no experience with V1.30 but look at the hardware trouble shooting forum on the Tweecer site http://eectuning.org

What Operating System? What version of TwEECer?

Re-read your post... the car runs super rough and rich because it comes with the tuning strategy for a fox computer in position 1. What you have verified is that the TwEECer is connected correctly. To confirm, you should "read" EEC, then immediately write to TwEECer on position 1. This will upload the stock tune from the EEC onto position 1. After you do this, fire the car up and it will be running the stock tune from the TwEECer.

Turn the switch to "off" and it will deactivate the TwEECer and run the stock tune.

Still need the above info!

Thanks for jumping in guys!

I am using Windows Xp pro. My tweecer version is in my sig.

I can't even read the eec. It seems to me that the tweecer is communicating with the eec just fine, but is unable to communicate with the laptop.

I have been able to hook an external zip drive up to the usb port and read the zip drive.

When I get home I will uninstall the current usb driver, and try to install the driver from the STKR file, per the manual. However, I did try this last night with no luck.

I had same problem with my 1st laptop which had windows 98 SE plus and with newer laptop with windows ME , i had to manualy install driver ,it was pain in a$$

That sounds about like what I think is happening, except I cannot manually install the driver.

I got an email from this real cool dude named Mike Glover last night telling me that the earlier versions of XP will not allow drivers that have not been signed/verified by MS to be installed.

I think this is my problem so I am downloading all the updates for my system from MS.

If it works I will post so everyone can learn.

An Update to my problem

I have been through the manual several times, manually uninstalling and installing the tweecer usb driver. An email from Mike Glover implied that older versions of XP would not allow non MS certified drivers to be installed by default. So I downloaded all of the updates & current service packs from MS, and in System Properties - Hardware - Driver Signing I selected the button "Ignore - Install the software anyway and don't ask for my approval".
I then wiped Windows XP Home off of my computer and tried Windows XP Pro.
The result is still the same.
"The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed."
Even when the Device Manager shows no driver as being installed for the usb port.

I feel that one of two things are causing this problem for me.
1. There is something wrong with my TwEECer module.
2. The TwEECer usb driver is not downloading from the

Could someone try to download and install the TwEECer usb driver from the downloads page on TwEECer.com? This will let me know if the driver file I am downloading is working properly, or if the problem is coming up after I have downloaded.

By no means do I consider myself an expert in this are though, so if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

You're getting the driver install error because you are trying to update your windows USB driver but the computer is saying "Hey... you don't need to do that. Your USB is working fine. If its not broke, don't fix it." BTW, I run my TwEECer off XP home.

My guess, since to me it appears that you are doing everything correctly, is that there is a physical issue. Your cable might be faulty or perhaps the connections aren't secure? The unit itself could have a defect. I'd double check the connections, start from scratch, and if that doesn't work get on the horn with TwEECer.

The magic of USB and windows XP is that there is IMMEDIATE recognition when plug and play devices are attached. That you are not getting that recognition sets a flag in my mind that its not software related. Especially since you have proven out that your USB functions correctly.

It does seem that the Tweecer itself is hosed. Mike emailed me and asked me to ship it to him so he could check it out. I should get it back in a few days.

I'll post any results I get.

I'm not that great at computer stuff as all I know has been self taught so having said that

I know when I have my stuff all hooked up and turn on the key to power up everything, I see what peeps have told me is the usb driver loading.

Is is possible that having everything connected and powered up might help in any sort of way

Just a thought or long shot

I can relate, as I have had to learn to use computers basically on my own as well.

Supposedly the TwEECer usb driver should be installed before hooking anything up to the EEC.

Regardless, it is out of my hands now. Mike Glover should recieve the tweecer module tomorrow. I guess I will just have to wait.

The TwEECer doesn't have to be in the car for the computer to recognize it. USB carries its own power, hell, I recharge the iPod's batteries via USB. What I'm saying is that you're supposed to check out the TwEECer before it goes into the car... the comp should recognize it when you hook it in on the workbench before it even goes into the car. If it doesn't, and you've proved out your USB working (you have), and you are running XP with the most recent USB drivers, then there is a physical issue with either the cable or the unit itself.

Its sounds as if the computer is using the usb driver that you used for the zip drive, When you delete it and try to reinstall the registery wont let you change the driver. You will have to have some one that knows there way around the registery in your comp to change it or add the driver so you can switch between drivers depending on what your useing. Unless there is soemthing wrong with the tweecer unit.

That was basically the conclusion I had come to, except it took me about a week, cause I'm such a rookie with driver installs.
Adam, you signed "tech support", are you a TwEECer employee?

Forced2dv8- I actually was able to remove all drivers from the usb, but I was unable to install the driver for the tweecer, Windows just wasn't having it.

Mike Glover is looking the unit over, and I imagine will let me know exactly what the problem is real soon.

It doesn't quite work like that. Its more like the zip drive used the USB driver. The USB driver stays the same... the plug and play hardware is able to communicate with the bus because it "speaks" USB. This is the plug and play philosophy.

When you plug a USB device in, the USB queries the device, figures out what its needs are in terms of power and data transfer, and assigns it a number. This is called enumeration.

If the poster connected a plug and play device to a working USB port, and the enumeration process did not occur, then something is wrong with either the device or the cable.

I must say that I am impressed with how Mike Glover does business. I overnighted the tweecer to him Monday, and on Wed I had recieved the first missed delivery notice from the mail man. That just blows me away!

I just installed the tweecer on the laptop and it worked perfectly! I can't wait to get out and see how bad I can mess up the computer!
I am sure I will have more questions soon!
