Everybody here has helped me so much - but i can't get anything to match up in my I6 to 302 swap i have decided to drop the tranny out entirely and just get the 302 in and then deal with the tranny on its own - well, sounded good until i dropped the engine in - and it tilts FORWARD - i don't get it - then i switch the motor mounts around - and it tilts BACKWARDS did some looney at the parts house give me the wrong motor mounts? Also, the oil pan still hits the chassis brace - shoot me now! what a predicament

The engine in without the tranny will not sit level...is that what you are describing? you have to support the motor with a jack or something while dealing with the tranny.

Well, what mounts did you ask for? I got a set of 66 v8 mounts in mine but you'll need the frame mounts as well. Also you need the front sump pan for your 302. I should have mine on the road monday THANK GOD!! Trust me I know your pain!

Exactly what these guys said. I did the I6 to 393 swap. It was trciky figuring it al out but then again until now I had never even worked on a car.

Level out the engine with a stand and the oil pan should not hit. What tranny are you using? You will have to get a new bellhousing ya know as well as a bunch of other parts. You sure you want to do this? Did you do any research before you started this project?

Hello, again. Did you read my post on the shifter cable setup from the 86-93 Mustang v8's? I think your mount problem might be the fact that you are trying to use the late model 1 piece mounts. I'm not positive, but I think the older v8 Mustangs used the 2 piece mounts with the horizontal bolt going through them. Can someone with an original v8 confirm this for me? That's a possibility why the engine sits so low. It'll be worth it in the end!

Okay - here goes - the 302 and C4 are both out of a 71 Torino - the oil pan (i am told by a couple of parts houses) is the same on the stang 289 and the 302 and on the Torino - i do have the 2 piece mounts, bracket with the kinda flat y shaped mounts with the long bolt that goes thru the brackets - i did do gobs of research on this and have been told time and again - NO PROBLEM - but something isn't right and i can't figure it out - i agree that the engine won't sit flat until it is attached to the tranny but when the engine tilts forward, it's firm, it will not tip back to attach to tranny - when tranny is in - one of two things happen depending on which way the motor mounts sit - one way and the engine is an inch away from the tranny, and will not move - switch the motor mounts, and they don't match up and the engine won't drop in - either way, and the oil pan hits the chassis brace right where the drain plug is - as for the tranny - it is the larger C4 with the big bellhousing and the 164 tooth flywheel - came with the engine - tomorrow night hubby says he wants to attach the tranny to the engine and try to drop it in that way - thank you everybody - if i survive this and get my pony on the road - I will never do a swap again -

Looking at this from a general point of view...
The engine normally tilts back down when installed properly. Since the drainplug on the oil pan sump is hitting that doesn't necessarily mean it's too low but rather that it's sitting too far back in the chassis. My suggestion is to bolt up the tranny, install the motor mounts so the engine tilts back and install the assy. and see where the tranny crossmember is supposed to be. With it tilting back, the oil pan should clear the front crossmember. Are you sure the 2 piece mounts are correctly positioned with each other and side to side? If you're not absolutely sure, try some different combinations to see if you can get it to fit. Your husband sounds like a very patient guy.

I've done one swap in a 65 as well as a clutch change and more recently had the tranny out of my 67 twice. Neither time did I notice the engine tilting. Maybe I was just darn lucky?

I'm not talking a big tilt. If you check a carbed engine, the base where the carb bolts on to the intake is set to be level. If you measure the level of the tops of the valve covers (front to back), I think you'll find they are tilted downward. Try it anyway, just for fun!

When i say the engine is tilted forward- i mean BIG tilt! you can see the lower pulley through where the bumper would be (I have it partially disassembled) - if i were to put the valve covers on, the back parts would touch the underside of the hood. My hubby is patient, but yesterday about did him in he said the same thing, it should tilt somewhat forward until it was attached to the tranny - just not like it was - that's why he said he wanted to try to put engine and tranny in in one piece. He has tried so many combinations on the brackets and motor mounts - it always ends up the same - i wish i had pictures of brackets and motor mounts installed correctly just to see if we're losing our mind

Could you leave the engine hoist attached to the intake or block until the tranny is hooked up?

South Carolina - Have you ever heard of Southern Rods & Parts? - Huby works there (Chevy place) - Mason's Hot Rods is the leading Ford restorer in the area - if i can't get the engine in - hubby says we will need to take them the car - I'd like to avoid that

What city are you in? I live in N.C. I might go to N.P.D. in Charlotte sometime in the next week and it's right near the S.C. line.

You must have the mounts installed incorrectly. Or you have the wrong mounts. Can you post pics?
