Occasional grinding in trans

Hey guys whats up,
finally back on the boards after a long long break...

Lately i have been having grinding and a loud POP when i down shift into 2nd gear out of 3rd. it doesnt do it all the time but every now and then it does do it. what could cause this?

a year and a half maybe 2 years ago i did a clutch job and was told to put some sort of ATF fluid in my 5 speed. could this be the reason?

also my speedometer and my odometer are not working. would this be the speedo gear that is messed up?

I think the 2nd gear thing is pretty common in these cars, something to do with the synchros.

As far as the speedo and odometer both being out, check the speedo cable. Sometimes it can work its way out of the tranny. If so, just slide it in and your good to go.

a 3-2 downshift is pretty hard on the soft parts in the trans - rev match if you can.
also, i might try a quality synthetic ATF in there. get 3 quarts and you will have some left over.

tach runs off the coil (if wanting to fix it). good luck.
