octane

I have a new 04 gt, it was making a funky noise, took it to the dealership they asked me what octane gas I was using. I use 91 or 88, they said the car is pinging and I should be using 85 because I am in utah @ a high altitude. Hello the manual says don't go below 86 at high altitudes???? I am confuzed? What yall think?

#2. Can you even BUY gas less than 87 octane anymore?

#3. If you are pinging, you go higher octane.

try using full synthetic next time you change your oil. that fixed my pinging.

thanks, i'll try some high octane chevron and change my oil, stang2382 what kind of full synthetic did you use? Yeah and the service advisor told me that my tech guy was some expert and he has some coveted ford tool chest/box that ford only gives to the highest certified techs. lol He said I should be using 85, what a dork. My lawn mower requires 87, lol

As far as I know, the cure for pinging is using higher octane fuel. Why the heck that jackass is telling you to use 85 octane?

We run only 91 or better, preferably 93. No pinging problems...

They kept asking if I had chipped it? The car was in the shop for two days, you think they would know if I had. But no it is not chipped. But as far as altitude is concerned does higher altitude = higher octane need? In utah we have 85,88,91. 91 is as high as we go. And it is 2 bucks a gallon! That probably isn't as bad as other areas but we get paid crappy here.

Man, I had the same problem with my 2000 GT, It pings under light throttle mainly when it's a little cool outside. I took my car into the dealership and they told me to stop using gas that was higher than 87 octance..but under full throttle my car spark knocks..badly. So I use 89 octane and only drive it when it warm outside..It's my second car.

go heels, I think I have the same thing you do. Where do you live, carolina, and that is low altitude right? It only does it during light throttle. It is very intermittent. Sounds like a sucking, or like something thing is rubbing tinney noise? The sales manager thought it was the throw out bearing rubbing. Bad knock sensor?

I think we do have the same problem..I live in Raleigh NC. What octane gas are you running now? I'm trying to find a shop in the area that will do a good dyno tune..finally settle it once and for all..Does your car do it at any particular temp.?

The dealship did an extensive carbon cleaning..it still does it. I'm trying to find a shop that will do a good dyno tune.

It does it more in the cold, and when i lug it out a little - with low rpm and light throttle. What type of oil do you use goheels? full synth? The dealership said they are gonna try to get a hold of the ford regional rep, to look at the preignition pinging. They told me it could take up to 3 weeks for that. So we'll see what he will do, I am guessing probably nothing. I took the sales manager for a ride and he told me that "this is not right." It has been in the shop 3 times, the first 2 they said it was normal. The 3rd I asked to take the shop foreman for a ride myself. They finally acknowledged something was wrong. What a pain. Good thing is if i roll down the windows and hit it, i can't hear a thing!

I tried 87 octane for a while and it didn't help..it only made my car spark knock under full throttle. We have same problem it sounds like to me. They even did an octane adjustment to my car which does nothing but de-tune it and it still does it. Since it only does it when it's cool outside, makes it very confusing...You can not duplicate this with engine idling..only under light load.

I am in Colorado (5900 feet) and my car ran much better with then 91 octane instead of the 87.
