Odd loud noises at low speed, also low power

I noticed a little bit of a rattle a month or so ago, but it went away and never returned until yesterday. Oh my god.....While pulling out of a parking space (Reverse) and then going forward, I could hear a loud clanging sound between me and the engine (more on the passenger's side). Whether the clutch was in or out, the noise continued until reaching third gear, but louder with clutch out. This happened whenever I started the engine after it was cool. While slow in first and second, the loud clanging sound was noticeable to pedestrians as they looked in horror. :D

Also, power is down a lot, but sometimes it was OK. Once on the Interstate (later that day), I downshifted from 5th to 4th to pass someone and while pushing on the gas, almost nothing happened. I couldn't repeat this afterwards, but I could tell that my car didn't sound as stong at higher rpm's, nor did it have the normal sound going through 1st and 2nd from a stop at a pretty good pace.

Add to the fact that while all this weirdness is going on, I did average about 20mpg for my trip (190 miles round trip). All the stock guages look normal, but I know that doesn't mean a whole lot. Smooth sailing at 70-75mph on the Interstate in 5th while taking it very easy, but it sure felt weak working my way up to that speed on the entrance ramps. I did notice that as I accelerated, both the rpm's and mph increased together, so that should possibly eliminate the possibility of a tranny going bad. Spark plug wires are snug, too, and the car starts up immediately without a hint of hesitation.

While reving the engine a little bit this afternoon when the car was cold, the clanging didn't happen, but then I didn't move the car, just turned it over for a few minutes. I do hear a bit of a whine under the hood. I can hear that the sound is different and weaker than normal. Reving quickly does not produce the same exhaust note anymore, it's lacking in tone and depth. I do hear a hissing and/or slightly metallic sound on the passenger side under the car (possibly near the cats).

Maybe something is loose, but just in case, I'm going to have Ford run a diagnostic on it (only a few blocks from house). I am hoping that something obvious will arise, but maybe they'll see something I don't. Normally, I'd put it up on ramps and do a thorough exam, but recently I injured my left hand which needed stitches. Since my injury hasn't healed and it is supposed to stay clean, I kind of have to rely on Ford finding something. If the diagnostic reveals something, I can then plan on how to get it fixed. Don't think for a second that Ford will actually be fixing my car, but I'm willing to pay for a diagnostic since it's close by. I know a good mechanic shop that works on lots of stangs, so I may try them once I have an idea of what's wrong (they are a few miles away in the opposite direction of work).

Any ideas? I can provide more info (even though this is terribly long already), but this is all I can remember off hand. :(

Clutch

Well,

I just had a problem somewhat like yours. At least from what I read in the first paragraph.. :D

Anyways, I thought it was strictly coming from my Passenger side as well. It happened going in reverse and with the clutch ingaged or not. I was scared that it was my trans. However this was also my orig. clutch with 130,000 miles on it. We looked and looked and, I finally had the clutch replaced and now the problem is gone. I haven't heard it yet, ofcourse its only been 3 days since i got it back.

Meangene21: Thanks for the info. I'm leaning away from a tranny problem, but I could be wrong. All gears engage fine/strong, rpm's follows with the mph, clutch engages at same point in all gears (about 1/2 way out), and the noise happens whether the clutch is in. It seems that the movement of the car, particularly over bumps in the road, make the clanging sound begin, so something's gotta be loose. No clanging while sitting still, but I can coast at 20-30mph and hear it sometimes. Hmmmm........

130,000 on the original clutch? WOW!!! I had mine replaced twice in 12 months back in 1998, because the dealer found that the clutch was not wearing evenly at all. They replaced lots of stuff that could have cost me thousands, but I had a 70,000 mile warranty. Whew! Now the clutch is just fine.

I just dropped mine off for the diagnostic, but before I left I had my wife listen in the driveway while I backed out of the garage and drove in a couple circles around the culdesac. No clanging sound, but there was definitely a hissing sound and a loss in power. Also, there is no bass to the exhaust note at all, more of a high pitched sound.

Anyways, while on the way to the dealer, it started the clanging again. After reading lots of old posts, I'm betting that something (exhaust related) is loose, broken, or possibly a burnt hole somewhere. As I pulled into the service bay (large hallway looking thing between two buildings) and the service guy heard it loud and clear.

Maybe new headers and/or H-pipe is in order? No matter what, I won't replace anything with stock parts if aftermarket stuff is available.

Thanks for the response. Sorry so long, just irritated about not figuring this one out. I'll post tomorrow once a tech looks at it. Saw an Azure Blue Mach 1 on the lot.....sure was tempting to solve my problem with a new car. :)

Ford found the problem!!! The cats have come apart inside and they are clogging the airflow. The called me with the solution and the price to fix the cats. You'll never guess what they quoted me to fix this...............$2,400.00..........gasp...........exhale............. :bs:

Yep. That's right.

We'll obviously I know better than to get raped like that. I called my local muffler shop and they'll install any H or X pipe I bring them and only charge me for one hours worth of labor ($65.00). Only question now is when, where, and which one do I get. I live in the Atlanta area, so Mustangs Unlimited is only 20 minutes away and they carry: BBK H w/cats, Bassani X w/cats, and MAC H w/cats. I have to have cats for emissions. Bassani is in stock so that's good and I've heard that MAC is prone to rust and may not last as long as others. I want a good quality H or X pipe that will give me a deeper sound. Don't care about how loud, just want to make a good decision.

Any ideas? :D

HAHAHAHA 2400.. Amazing isn't it.. you should see the prices on some of the GM stuff we sell at work. 2400 seems pretty cheap when you look at GM..

Either way I noticed that your considering an aftermarket pipe.. Good Decision.. :D

I've got another post about my cats being TOAST! If you have any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it regarding an H or X pipe.

I've done lots of research now and I'm more worried than ever. Lots of people have had problems with Bassani (cats are prone to go bad soon), BBK (H pipe never fits good, but maybe X is good), MAC (some claim cats sound like they're broken when not, kind of a can-of-marbles sound).

Hop on over to my other post if you have suggestions.

Thanks.

I lied

Okay I lied.. I drove my car today after having it setting for about a week. The damn clanging noise that you talk about is there again.

I know its not the cats because I have NONE ! Anybody have any more clues as to what it could be? The clutch is has just been replaced. :bang:

thanks
