Just got a 97 GT yesterday and changed oil today, I put in a five quart jug and it hardly touches the dip stick. The tube was loose cause of header change so i bolted it down and made sure the lip was against the block and still read the same. I've had bout nine 5.0's and they took five quarts this is my first 4.6 do these things take six quarts?

There is no argument. My 96 takes 6qts.
Bottom line, if you install 5qts and it is short you have to add more till it is full.

I didn't mean to quote the "argument" part, just the 5 1/2 - 6. There is a discrepancy among members of the forum that some say their cars take 5 and some say 6. So anywhere in-between and you should be good to go.

I'll throw another quart in it just to be on the safe side.
Thanks

Everytime I change the oil in my 96 GT I put six quarts in and
the dipstick reads at the full line.

I agree...this is very very long continuing arguement...mine has always taken 5.5-6 at the Quick lube places, just got inspection sticker at Ford dealership a couple days ago...they used 6 yes 6 quarts... mine is 6.

I have been doing my own oil changes for 2+ years on my Mustang and I know for a fact that it takes exactly 5 quarts.

Six put it bout where it needs to be. I don't have a lot of faith in the accuracy of dip sticks though.

A '97 takes exactly 6 quarts. A '98 takes exactly 6 quarts. 99+... who knows... ask them. And if you are using synthetic, have another quart ready for a month or two later.
