oil pan

Since I have to pull my timing chain cover to fix the oil dipstick problem (see previous posts), I decided to change to an 8qt oil pan, new pump and windage tray. Has anyone done this type of swap with the engine in the car??

Please just use facts, not personal antecdotes...as some other members may get upset and start screaming that this belongs in talk not tech. :D

Also, please do not describe any sort of custom or otherwise distiguishing marks on your vehicle as other members may think you are talking about a car from a certain Nicholas Cage movie. :D

I did this in a small block car... I don't know how yours differs.

Undo both engine mounts, jack the motor up. Support it with wood blocks under the mounts to keep it up.
After that, the worst part was that the oil pump had to be removed before the pan would come totally out. I had to undo the bolts with the pan dropped, and then set the pump in the pan. At that point it all came right out.
To go back, I had to put the pump in the pan, set it in place, then bolt the pump back with the pan hanging down.
Let the engine down and re-stick the mounts.
That worked for me. I suppose I could have dropped steering and/or the crossmember.

There are many ways to replace it,
But the easiest way is to remove the cross member, pull the 2 bolts from the idler arm link which will allow it to swing back out of the way some and remove the pan straight down.
I you have a 1/4 in drive socket set you don't even have to remove the starter.

Ps. the is a timing cover on ebay with a 5/14 pot date for sale. :D
