This goes back to my valvetrain post....well I got started adjusting the valvetrain and snapped the stud on the first valve I tried. I couldent get the locking nut off as it was really tight (I still cant get it out now even with the rocker retaining bolt in a set of vice grips). Well, before I broke anything, I figured if I loosend the retaining bolt from the stud then that might help loosen up the locking nut too. Well, I only turned it a bit and felt some resistance but not much maybe 15 ft-lbs or so, so I kept going and then it got really easy. I thought I had it loose until I found a little stump of a stud sticking up from the trunion on the rocker arm. I'm going to call AFR tomorrow and get me another stud but I also need to get a new rocker retaining bolt w/ a locking allen bolt in the middle (since there is stil some of the stud stuck in this one). I was going to call DSS and see if the'll send me another one as these are there rockers...but do you guyz think I can get these two things locally? How hard could they be to find?

Also, on a side note. I thought studs were supposed to be strong...? What the hell was up with this one. Unless by unscrewing the retaining bolt with the locking nut still in place I placed a tremendous amount of stress on the stud somehow! But that does not sound logical to me when you think about how the locking nut works. Could it be that this stud was going south and deflecting and causing my tapping noise?
I'm just very annoyed about this. It seems that everyday something goes wrong...I'm getting tired of this. Whats the fun of having a fast car if you cant abuse it w/o it breaking.

P.S. Sorry about the rant...but if you guyz have any answers to the important questions I have between all the filler...that would help me a lot. :bang: :bang: :( :nonono: :damnit: :fuss:  :uzi:  :chair: :notnice:

Do I have to buy a set or can I get them individually. MAybe i will just get a new set of ARP studs and do this head while I'm there and then do the other head when I have time. Has anyone else had this problem with AFR studs? Also, where can I get torque specs for the studs and do I have to get any specific size or are all 3/8 studs the same. How much does a set go for?

Would you have a part# for me GTJAKE and/or place of purchase. Are the ones that afr heads come with 3/8" or 7/16"? If they are the smaller ones can I run the 3/8" ones with my existing rockers? Or would I need different rockers to do that?

I bought 7/16" studs and rockers, so I don't have a p/n for the 3/8" studs. AFR's come with 3/8" studs. I got mine through Summit, they are chevy studs. Call AFR and ask them what ARP p/n you need, that's what I did.

My upgraded studs on my AFR's (3/8's are "stock" and got 7/16" ARP's from Ed) for $30 bucks for the entire set...

Torque to 60 ft. lbs I believe...

I would replace them all while your doing it...both heads while the upper intake is off...

I finally get back to this post....Stangnet wasn't working everytime I tried to get on. Lots of time's it said preperation for hurricane ivan. Anyways, I didnt feel like getting a new set of rocker arms so I went with the 3/8" stud set. And yea I talked to a guy at jegs and he said there chevy studs so thats what I got and they fit perfect. Now in the catalogue the ARP's are listed as having a 170,000 psi tensile strength and that what the guy at AFR rated theirs at. Coincidence? I dont really know. But I am going to believe him. I'm guessing I just had a bad one since all the other ones were fine when I broke them loose. Anyways, i pretty much got one side done. Hey Dan I'm gonna give you a call tonight. If your free maybe we can get the drivers side done right quick. If not I'll save that for another day. Anyways, this will be good practice for you when you get your heads. :D
