ok so went to pick a part today and thought this would be easy hahaha i pretty much know what to do but heres my problem ok i took out that lil bolt on the carrier then i couldnt get that shaft outta there it was just stuck and i dont know why it just barley moved up and down a lil bit so i moved on to another car and the same thing happend! my question is what am i doing wrong there wasnt a S sping if that helps but what do you guys recomend cause i was pissed i coudnt do somthing so simple i mean i hit it with a hammer and it didnt wana buge and i know i didnt snap that lil bolt cause i took it out both times so what do you guys think???

you have to remove the differential pan and and remove the differential pinion shaft lockbolt then push in on axles and remove the rear axle shaft retaining c clip holding the axle inside the housing....then remove axles....

i know exactly how to take axles out of a fox but these 2 at pickapart were both fighters i my fox they came out easy
both of the cars i tryed didnt have S spings could that of been the problem?

the reason i ask is i see in your post where you removed the bolt on the carrier but you don't say anything about removing the rear axle shaft retaining c clip holding the axle inside the housing.

this is not the best picture but if you have a printer it should print fine...

Yep, every now and then the cross pin gets stuck in there. If you have the cross pin locking bolt out, then the acutal pin should be free to slide out. If it doesn't:

It may be worn or galled in the sleeve/bearings where it goes through the spider gears, or stuck in the diff housing. Most likely at the gears.

Tap it with a hammer and a brass punch or wood and see if it will go one way or the other. If it starts, then tap as much as possible. Get it as far out as possible while still being able to rotate the carrier to get the part of the cross pin that you drove out where you can get vice grips on it. Then twist and pull until it comes out.

If it is damaged on the ends, clean it up with crocus cloth, or 1500 sandpaper before reassembly.

If you have 3.73 or higher gears, the cross pin has to have a relief on the end of it to clear the ring gear teeth, and will only go out one way. I should have enough movement and another relief in it to allow the axles to be pushed in to remove the c clips, but may only come out of the carrier one way. The others will come out either way.

yeah, basically all you can do is pound the **** out of it and if it doesn't come... tough luck.

Did ALL of the pinion shaft retaining bolt come out? If they break in there, I wouldn't know how to help you.

Bill, you're talking about c-clips being pulled, but they can't be until the pinion shaft is removed... He can't remove it. Thanks for reading the Chilton's to us.

ok fastdriver! i get it now in his post when he said, " i couldnt get that shaft outta there it was just stuck" i thought he was talking about the axle shaft was stuck and i was explaining how to remove pinion shaft and lockbolt and c-clamps but he was talking about the pinion shaft was stuck i never seen this happen and i was being hardheaded about reading. between your and rd's post i understand the axle shafts are not stuck because he didnt remove lockbolt, shaft and c-clips,its the pinion shaftthats stuck.....were all learning good stuff here thanks guys and forgive my misinformation.....
