OK.... I'm Pissed! Just Found I Don't Have GT40P's!

I know this sounds really dumb to you guys.... but I just found out the heads on my '97 Mountaineer motor are actually GT40's (same as Cobra's). I never "knew" the differences & never looked into it. (BTW Tom, thanks.... one of your links in another post sent me to a page where I found this stuff out.) It turns out that, midway through 1997, Ford changed to the P head. I was "told" that '97+ Exp./Mount. heads were P's. Well, not early '97's. I just took them off and realized the have the "GT" casting and the "3-bar casting" instead of the "4-bar casting". This blows. I've always heard the P's are much better than the Cobra's. I may just sell them and get some TW's. What do you guys think.... should I still rework these.... or would I be better off to sell them & save for TW's?

BTW..... FYI: I was not ripped in this situation.... My dad gave me this complete engine from a '97 Mountaineer with 60K miles on it.

GT40P's are better than stock cobra GT40's but only by a few cfm. Its not a noticeable difference at all; maybe 3-5hp. Actually with the GT40P's, its harder to mod your car exhaust wise because you have to find headers specific for the P heads and not many make those. I think MAC is the only one and they dont even make longtubes for them. With the Cobra GT40's you can put any header you want on there.

I've seen tests that go both ways -- some show the P heads better, some show the original 40's better. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

I definitely wouldn't be upset.

The NMRA's Factory Stock, where the only cylinder heads allowed for 5.0 cars are the E5, E7, GT40, and GT40P, the fastest pushrod cars are using standard GT40 heads...

The GT40p's are good heads and they can make good power for a street car. They are a great mod for the money spent.

It is true they are the best choice for an iron Ford head but are not THAT different from the older GT40's and they are not THAT much better.

IMHO, its just not that big of a deal.

i have always heard that stock to stock comparison, p's are a little better, but once you get into porting, p's cant be worked on nearly as much as the earlier gt40's.
