That's how it should have been. That shouldn't be a close race at all.

the dirty MAF sensor held it at 4000 rpm?

The spout connector is under the air filter box. There will be a wire with the
end of it haveing a gray plug on it. If it is missing you wont see a gray plug that connects the 2 terminals. This spout connector is removed when adjusting the timing on these cars. If this is missing the computer will not increase timing.
