OMFG! BBK X O/R sounds like a tin can

Its the type of x-pipe you have. the bbk x-pipe is very similar to the bassani. they both have a small chamber. If you run them through chambered mufflers you get that tin can sound. You have two options....change the x-pipe to a flow-tech, dr. gas or something similar with a true x-pipe design or change your flowmasters to something like a dynomax ultraflow. It will not sound right with the current set-up.

Its the type of x-pipe you have. The bbk and the bassani share the same type design on their x. Its actually a small chamber more like a pro-chamber. Its not really a x-pipe at all. Either get a true x-pipe like a flow-tech or dr gas or change you flowmasters to something like dynomax race magnums ovals(not the bullets) or a magnaflows. A straight through muffler will sound good and get rid of the tin can echo. 4.6 motors are worse than 5.0s about the tin can sound. Had the same thing happen to me on two of my cars.

I use to have a VRS X-pipe with a Flowmaster exhaust and shorty headers and my car sounded just sick. Absolutely loved the sound, mean as hell.

This pic was from waaaay back in the day.

The tin can sound is the accoustic of your motor through your longtubes... pipe diameters and lengths, long tubes and x pipes and what not. You have to change the geometry, get new mufflers or get a new x pipe (or lose the longtubes, prolly not what you want though)... 5.0 and super fords did an article on mustang sounds a little while back... I can't remember which issue cause it's at work :bang: but the tin can sound is most likely exhaust geometry... I'd change out your mufflers to a straight through design instead of baffled like flowmasters...
For the record, I think flowmasters and shorties with no cats and a slightly lumpy cam is the best sound in the world...

i dunno what it is about the bbk x pipe but myne sounds like that from like 2500 to 3000 rpm's and it really annoys me to no end. its wierd cause it wont do it when i rev the car only when i get the car under a load.

BBK makes good quality stuff, but the X on thier X-pipes is what i would say the problem is. If you look at the VRS pipe in that pic on page one and look at a bbk X-pipe there is a big difference, the VRS is a true X-pipe and the BBK really isnt.

i had a flowtech x-pipe that was a true x, and that sounded so much smoother than the bbk, but the quality was terrible and two flanges bent on it...

six one way half dozen the other.

I went back the the exhaust shop today and he said its my right header hitting the side of the car. I doubt it would do because i hear it from the center of the car when i go to 3krpm i hear aluminum banging. Problem is still there. slowmasters have a big tin can sound when i rev it thinkin of getting a real kit soon.

BBK X PIPE IS THE WORST MID PIPE EVER MADE. Worst sounding combination on a mustang is the bbk x pipe and flowmaster 5.0 or 4.6 Its not your flows, your car will sound amazing with a different x pipe. Im always on Mustangexhaust.com and if you ask ANYONE there the answer will be bbk x pipe should be destroyed. get a doctor gas x pipe or anything just trash the bbk and you will be alright ;)

I have nothing to back this up with, but i did notice that the BBK X is really big...like it's more than just an X really, it's almost as open as a Pro Chamber is. The best mid pipe that money can buy is a Dr. Gas X, and i don't say that because i have one, i say that because i've had all the rest and this is the best i've come accross yet.

On my Fox I had BBK LTs, BBK O/R X, and 2 chamber flows and it sounded sick, ask anyone who ever heard it. No rattles or tin sounding, just bad ass. Something isn't right, check to make sure everything is tight.

That being said, on my Cobra I have a Dr. Gas Xscream X pipe (uncatted), it's very nice.

i have a upr o/r x-pipe and dynomax muffs, its kinda tinny but tolerable. is it true that mufflers with packing stop that? i had read that in another thread but don't know the validity of it. i have a 5.0 (4th 5.0) and i know h-pipes do the job. what mufflers do a 5.0 with an x justice?

Unfortunately, this is not the first time this issue has come up with BBK. The problem that you are hearing is that BBK uses a thinner wall thickness in their tubing for the X. As a result, the pipes will actually flex a bit under pressure and thereby cause a resonance (tin sound) at certain RPMS. Similar to putting pressure through a soda can.

We had this same situation come up on my friends 96 Cobra. He purchased a BBK o/r X pipe and it had a terrible tin sound. After investigating all over the place for where it was hitting and any lose welds, we found nothing. After a lot of research we finally spoke with some folks at classictube. They mainly deal in exhaust tubing and brake lines. They explained that the thicker the wall thickness of the exhaust tubing, the deeper the net sound.

As a result, my friend purchased a stainless bassani o/r x and the tin sound was gone.

I put my bassani longtubes on and thier 3'' x-pipe and all of the tin can sound was gone... car has a way better tone, sounds way cleaner and its actually a little quieter.

you get what you pay for

I have a BBK X pipe with a set of MAC flowpaths and kind of like the odd sound. I had the same X pipe with some Hooker Aero Chambers and it sounded really bad. I also have had a Dr. Gas and it was a lot smoother sounding. I'm going back to long tubes and the Dr. Gas X pipe next weekend so we'll see how that sounds with the MACs.

BBK is crap in my opinion. A lot of people say mac is crap too but I've had good luck with mac.

Mac shortys, vrs o/r x, and mac flowpaths sound mean on my car, especially with the intake now. Not quite as deep or loud as an o/r h at idle, but when I give it even a blip of the gas it turns heads. Cruising at about 2k rpms in any gear but 5th is a nasty sound too (in a good way.) I set a car alarm off just pulling in the school parking lot and lightly blipping the pedal as I was engaging the clutch lol. And man when you romp on it, x > h imho.

I had a bassani o/r x paired with dumped flows and couldnt stand that tinny sound you describe. Flows were off the car within two weeks. Now I have some straight through mufflers and sounds 100x better.
MY opinion, x-pipe= straight through mufflers
h-pipe= chambered mufflers
