One wheel peel? This made a HUGE difference!

Here is my post after changing my rear end fluid and having a leak -> http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=673506

It wasn't a leak, it was just what was left over from overfilling still dripping. It has been 24 hours drip free (knock on wood), so it seems to be fine now. Just like most poster's thought.

Anyways, the car had 90,000 miles on it and would sporadically only spin one wheel. Kind of got irritating when nailing second gear and the car would just spin like crazy. It was also bad when making a turn and nailing it, it would just spin one wheel. Well, I took the cover off and cleaned the fluid out. Then re-filled with Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90. I also added friction modifier, even though their website said it was unnecessary. Man, it grips like crazy now!!! It smokes both of these cheapa## Fulda's like crazy now. The Mobile 1 is kind of expensive at $9 a bottle (takes 2), but well worth it! If you have this problem, this is well worth a try before getting too deep into replacing parts. It took care of my limited slip issue, plus took my annoying rear end noise away.

Too much friction modifier will make it grab great for a short time until it wears out the frictions and has to be rebuilt. So enjoy it while it lasts.

Be sure and use carbon fiber frictions when you rebuild it.

Here's what their website says:

"Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid. "

So, I figure I'm probably ok. Especially since I spilt about 1/4 of that stinky crap all over me instead of in the differential. Plus we all know my 225 high horsepower Stang needs the highest level of limited-slip performance :-)

Not to add more confusion to the mix but when I changed mine, I got mobil 1 and then went to ford to get friction modifier. The guy at ford told me not to use it with synthetic fluid. Who knows ....

99+ Mustangs use Motorcraft 75W-140 full synthetic with four ounces of friction modifier... There is a tag right on the diff that says this AND it is in your owner's manual.

RTFM

Well, my motto is....If I f' it up, just gives me an excuse to replace it with something better. I'm thinking 3.73's.... I also changed my sparkplugs and didn't use a torque wrench. Still waiting for one of those to pop out so I can do a PI swap!

Yeah I didn't torque my wheels so when they come flying off on the highway, I can get new ones

Anyway my limited slip is hosed, time for a rebuild booooo

LOL, I have been missing for a few days, we have been really busy at work..

You have several options to fix that. Ford offers two kits for a imited slip rebuild. one of them is preshimed and cost somewhere around 100 bucks and the other is not preshimmed and requires you to set the preload and that is 45 bucks.

personally I liek the non pre shimed kit that way I can setup the preload. Oh one last thing use the S-spring out of a F-150 8.8

Yeah man I noticed you haven't been around the past few days... my work's been busy too, but I go on stangnet anyway to keep my sanity :D . If you're interested, I'll be looking for someone to do the rebuild, and probably try and diagnose that stupid misfire I have (yes, it is still there ). I've got 6 weeks off and I'll be in the Boston area so let me know if that sounds like something you'd want to do (I'll pay you of course lol, not trying to get a freebie out of you :) ) Feel free to PM me about this... later mang!

Sure I will be interested in taking a look at it. . I will send you a PM.

Little side question here... How would I go about setting the preload on one of those rebuild kits? I got the $45 one and the directions say I need some special tool and give me a part number. Local dealer wanted $150 for the tool... Any other options?

And is the F-150 S spring stiffer?
