Hey guys i need some help, I only get around 200-210 miles on a full tank of gas. I calculated it out and only get around 17mpg on my basically stock '92 LX 5.0. why is this? I have a new computer in, the timing is set to stock*, I have replaced almost all the sensors and have done a full tune-up. I drive mainly highway miles. On my previous mustang i got around 20+ miles per gallon on a stock motor with 3.73's. The guy i bought this mustang from just put a rebuild on the motor and said it was basically stock build up. Could it be the injectors? Any info would be helpful, sorry for the long post.

Don't worry, I get the same amount of miles out of my car on a full tank. Same as you, mainly stock and new tune-up. I've never gotten much better mpg with my car so it just seems normal to me to get crappy gas milege all the time. I can be a real lightfoot and still get the same amount of miles to a tank. Some cars just do better than other I guess.

best i've ever gotten was 320miles and had exactly one gallon of gas left. Now I cant even break 210 to a tank. All stock 5.0 with 2:73's too. Assuming a need a tune up soon.

Highway kilometres, I'm getting 400km a tank full :)

In miles I figure probably around 200-225? I know that due to the fluctuating value on Canadian exchange is increasing against that of the US, so eventually our km/gallon will equal that of the US m/pgallon :)

Odd, I was able to eek out 25 mpg just barely, averaging 23 mpg highway with 3.73's and a carb.

A lot of people drive their cars wrong and as a result, think they are being real easy on their cars and always complain about wearing out parts and abysmal gas milage. Its kinda hard to explain but if you hear the engine groaning because you are in 4rth at 1500 rpms and trying to go up a hill, then you are really straining your entire powertrian and burning more gas to do less than if you were spinning the motor at 2k in the lower gear with much less load doing the same thing.

Do this: drop a gear, stabalize your speed to be the same and notice that on average, the gas pedal is not pushed down as far if you drop a gear in these situations. Of course, this only applies to a very narrow band of street driving between 1500-2300 rpms but running the motor at a higher rpm (but still driving calm, not higher rpm because your racing people =) ) results in better gas milage. Let the engine's torque push the car around.

Also, the cars seem to get much better milage at higher speeds. To a 5.0, 65 and 75 doesnt make much difference, maybe 2-300 rpm in 5th but you get much farther on that tiny amount of extra gas you burn.

I also noticed I get worse milage using high octane gas than low octane gas.

if all this still fails:

Reduce weight, pullies, replace ignition tune up items like cap/rotor and finally reduce some more weight. Get some 16 inch tires. These will speed you up for mostly the same effort as the 15 inchers (probably need rims to match for these). Um, reduce some weight too!

Have fun!

BTW 200 miles to the tank isnt THAT bad.
