Hey guys, I am trying to take out the axles out of a 8.8. I have rounded the head on the 5/16 head bolt that holds the cross pin in the diff. Am I screwed here? Anyone have any ideas on how to get this out?

The Craftsman extractor should work, just take your time and make sure you have a good grip. You'll have to do some looking to find a new pin.

there is also a kit that comes with a aligning pin with a hole through the center and a long flexible drill bit. You would have to get this from a tool truck most likely though. the twist sockets they are referring to are more accessible, but if the bolt snaps, you will need this drill kit.

fixed it. Used a 8mm 6 point and a little heat from a mapp gas torch. Came right out.

MAPP gas RULES!!
Use it, and use it often.

BTW: Next time, be very careful because the diff fluid could catch on fire. So, I always have a t-shirt to force/fan out the flame, or in the worse case, some water in a capped soda bottle. Having to replace the diff (or what ever) from water damage is FAR better than having the car go up in flames and maybe causing even more damage. That happened to a good friend that was always very careful with heat. All it takes is one *******ing spark to ruin your day.


P.S. IMHO, one of the BEST tool investments is a MAPP gas torch with hose. It lets you get into tight places and is more comfortable (and hence safer) to use.

This is similar to mine, but I don't have the self-lighting tip (and mine was ~1/2 the price at Home Depot)

lol, yeah I hear you. I work installing boilers for a living...I use heat all the time to break loose fittings, works every time. I had drained all the gear oil and wiped down the spot where I was heating it. Now if I could only get the C clips out, dosent seem the axle will push in far enough to get the c clip past the S sping. I hope your friend wasen't hurt in that accident
