Open Hole Behind Timing Bracket

I am working on a 93 5.0 with a very very bad oil leak. There is a open hole that looks like it was made for a bolt or sensor but not threaded. It is behind the timing pointer that's held on by 2 13mm bolts once timing pointer is removed it's easier to see. I put my smoke machine into the intake manifold and smoke comes out the hole. I put smoke machine in oil dipstick tube and way more smoke comes out.

Anyways what is this hole anyone know? I have several pix and videos of smoke machine shooting smoke out of it

I was thinking the same,..It's obviously cast for a future sensor of some kind, but right now it's just a big assed hole in the engine that's leaking oil, and making for a nasty internet picture...plug that dude.

Then take it to the .25 car wash and clean that pig.

Is that a timing cover for a carbureted engine? I believe the early Ford Windsor family of engines had the dipstick in the timing cover. That may be what the hole is for.

The aftermarket timing cover I bought had 2 small tap in plugs that were to seal up a hole just like the one in your picture. If I remember correctly, there were 2 similar holes.

Dipstick hole from early 302 engine. I'm gonnna guess the cover (or engine) is not original to the car. You can plug it up.

On my '88, that spot is just a raised boss that isn't machined.

Do you have the mechanical fuel pump mount on the drivers side?

thanks. I'll plug it up. My cousin paid 2k for this car, it runs strong but it dumps a quart of oil every few hundred miles. Exhaust covered in oil. Damn thing smokes like it's about to catch fire from the oil. And I have a two page list of problems. I think I'm talking him into selling it to someone else and let's start from a better foundation. I have no interest in building up a car that has 10 quarts of oil sprayed underside of whole car lol

Yes, like said, it's for a dipstick tube on an older timing cover. Not original to your car unless someone drilled it out.

There is an advantage to the oil leak, no rust or squeaks for awhile!
Check to make sure the cover is for the reverse rotation water pump, there is a difference,
What are the other problems with it?
