I recently blew a head gasket while at the track. I removed the heads, ported the exhaust chambers to match the headers better. I am also having a 3 angle valve job jone with some minor blending along with new higher rate springs. I know this was not the best option HP wise. I just don't have the $$ right now for the stuff I realy want. Therfore I am stuck with what I have. I am considering installing a new cam while I have the motor apart. The block is stock except for the work mentioned to the heads. What cam should I go with? I ocassionaly spray a 150 wet shot. I want something that would work well with that and still give good power off the juice. And what type of HP gain can I expect out of the mods?

I would just leave the stock cam in and just run a set of 1.72 rockers. This is because you said you don't have a lot of money and you are going to have to upgrade your rockers anyway even if you buy another cam. With a set of slightly ported stock heads going with too big of a cam could actually hurt you.

If you really want to get a good cam then I would go with go with a custom cam from either Buddy Rawls or Ed Curtis. But then again we are talking at least $350 just for the cam and then you would need rockers and pushrods and matching valve springs. This is why I just say go with 1.72's and run the stock cam.

This along with the port work should give you anywhere between 15 to 30 hp give or take a little depending on the quality of the work.

Also would I have to change my valve covers or pushrods?

I have the Craine Cams Gold series rockers. FRPP has a nice roller set but they are 1.6 ( I don't think they make 1.7s). CAT has some cheap stuff but I don't think they make them for SBF.

I saw that FRPP has a 1.7 set. I cannot remember the difference in the way they mount. Are the stock ones pedestal mount? and did they fit under the stock valve covers?

I agree with viking. Pro Magnums are the way to go and they will clear stock valve covers.

You may have to remove the oil baffle on the passenger side valve cover and grind off the tabs a little but that would be about it.

I would go with a Ford Racing B303 Cam still good for daily drivers but mine love the bottle.

How would the set-up react to 1.7 roller rockers, B303 Cam with the stock pushrods(they seem to be fine)?
